Odds as of January 19th at FanDuel

Part-Time Kyrie Better Than No Kyrie

Kyrie Irving’s odd arrangement with the Brooklyn Nets continues. The unvaccinated star guard can play in road games but cannot take part in home games because of COVID-19 mandates in New York City concerning arenas.

Irving made his season debut Jan. 5 and has had an immediate impact. In four games, he is averaging 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists.

After Kevin Durant sustained a sprained ligament in his left knee last Saturday that will sideline him indefinitely, Irving becomes even more important to the Nets. Irving had a season-high 27 points, nine assists and seven rebounds on Monday in a loss to the Cavaliers in Cleveland in the Nets first game since Durant’s injury.

Irving gets a favorable matchup Wednesday when the Nets visit Washington. The Wizards are 22nd in the NBA in defensive rating, allowing 111.6 points per 100 possessions.

Look for Irving to also play with a little bit of anger. He was perturbed by the media questioning his vaccination status following Monday’s game. A mad Kyrie usually means good results.

He was angry Monday. With New York online sports betting now launched, Brooklynites and New Yorkers can ride the wave of Angry Kyrie to the over on his points total.

  • The Pick: Kyrie Irving over 23.5 points (-118)

Morant Will Rise to Occasion

The Grizzlies will be shorthanded against the Bucks. Desmond Bane and Kyle Anderson are in the NBA’s health and safety protocols and Dillon Brooks is sidelined by an ankle injury.

That puts more of the scoring load on Ja Morant. Few players love being asked to carry their team more than the third-year guard, though.

Morant came into the season hoping to be selected to his first All-Star Game. Now he is in the MVP conversation with averages of 24.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists while shooting a career-best 35.5% on three-pointers.

Morant is one of just five players in the league averaging at least 24 points, five rebounds and six assists. The others: Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Luke Doncic and Nikola Jokic.

While the Bucks are eighth in the NBA in defensive rating, look for Morant to rise to the occasion in the Grizzlies’ first meeting of the year with the defending league champions.

  • The Pick: Ja Morant over 25.5 points (-122)
