For Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, the luckiest of lucky losers, Wednesday’s Madrid Open quarterfinal against No. 17 seed Borna Coric (4 pm EDT) is the opportunity of a lifetime.

Coric Wins a Marathon
Coric, whose career high of No. 12 came five years ago at age 21, has battled back from a long injury layoff to finally get back into the 20.
He’s capable of a big week at any time if he gets on a roll. He’s also a rare male player whose forehand is better than his backhand (Alexander Zverev is another).
The Croat’s third-round , straight-sets win over No. 12 seed Hubert Hurkacz sent a message, as Hurkacz is the three-set comeback guy.
On Tuesday, he won a marathon against No. 29 seed and home-country favorite Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5) in three hours, 28 minutes.
And it all hinged on an extremely lucky let cord, which dribbled over to the other side of the court for him at 5-5 in that deciding tiebreak, much to Davidovich Fokina’s dismay.
Lucky Loser Altmaier Gets Lucky
Altmaier, who was the No. 4 seed in qualifying, lost in the final round.
Then, he got lucky. The 24-year-old was third to be selected in the lucky loser lottery, after the late withdrawal of No. 18 seed Pablo Carreño Busta. He inherited the Spaniard’s first-round bye, too.

Even better: his section included another lucky loser, a qualifier, an injury retirement and the early-round upset of No. 3 seed Casper Ruud.
Coric will be his first seeded opponent this week.

Madrid Lucky Loser Passes the Torch
This will be the ninth time Coric has reached at least the quarterfinals at a Masters 1000 tournament – his first appearance since winning the Cincinnati Masters last summer. Since then, he’d been ousted in his opening-round match four consecutive times.
Altmaier was 1-8 at the ATP level coming into Madrid.
Altmaier vs Coric History
The two are meeting for the first time, so the edge on familiarity will go to Altmaier, who likely has seen far more of Coric than Coric has of him.
He’ll know to avoid the backhand when he can. And he’ll also know that Coric won’t serve him off the court.
The possibility that this could be quite competitive is likely why the Altmaier vs Coric odds are relatively close, despite the disparity in ranking.
Altmaier’s career high of No. 53 almost a year ago, after he won a Challenger on clay in Germany just before the French Open. But he then lost in the first round of 10 of his next 12 tournaments.
He came into Madrid having just won a Challenger on the American clay in Sarasota.
Even though he’s been been a pro since he was barely 16 (just like Coric), he’s been waiting for this breakthrough; his ATP won-loss record was 18-44 coming in.

After this week, he’ll be at No. 61 regardless. And if he can defeat Coric, he would vault up near the top 40; that would be a game changer.
How he handles the pressure will say a lot about his prospects going forward.
Altmaier vs Coric Prediction
Two great backands will be on display Wednesday – Coric’s solid two-hander, and Altmaier’s flashy one-hander. The fact that he has the ability to go down the line with it, to Coric’s weaker forehand, is a tool that might give him a chance.
He also didn’t have to break much of a sweat in his round of 16 win Tuesday, while Coric barely got through and played 3 1/2 hours.
