Will the Dallas/Philadelphia Spread Move Before Week 1?

To the extent that recency bias applies in the offseason, the public is likely to flock to the Eagles here. Philadelphia massacred the Commanders in the NFC Championship (55-23 home) and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl (40-22 neutral), easily covered the spread in both games. They finished last year on a six-game overall win streak dating back to the regular season. Four of the six wins were by double digits and none were by fewer than six points.

But there are some major caveats for anyone looking to back the Eagles as touchdown favorites.

Philadelphia went just 2-4 ATS (including playoffs) when facing a point spread of seven points or greater last season. However, the two games the Eagles covered both came against Dallas. Philadelphia won 34-6 as 7.5-point road favorites in Week 10 and 41-7 as 7.5-point home favorites in Week 17.

Their four ATS losses in those games were against Cleveland (20-16 win as nine-point home favorites in Week 6), Jacksonville (28-23 win as 7.5-point home favorites in Week 9), Carolina (22-16 win as 14-point home favorites in Week 14), and the LA Rams (28-22 win as seven-point home favorites in the Divisional Round).

In the NFL odds for Week 1 of last season, only one game had a point spread higher than 5.5 points: Patriots vs Bengals, where Cincinnati was a 9.5-point home favorite and lost straight-up in a confounding result that ended up keeping them out of the playoffs.

Who Did the Eagles Lose/Add This Offseason?

As is often the case with Super Bowl winners, the Eagles lost some significant players from their championship roster during free agency. Darius Slay (cornerback), Mekhi Becton (right guard), Josh Sweat (edge), Milton Williams (defensive tackle), and Kenneth Gainwell (running back) were the biggest losses via free agency.

The team also traded cornerback CJ Gardner-Johnson to Houston for guard Kenyon Green.

Howie Roseman brought in veteran corner Adoree’ Jackson and outside linebackers Azeez Ojulari and Joshua Uche, among some other minor additions. All in all, Eagles fans have to feel pretty good about the amount of talent they kept from 2024’s absolutely stacked roster.

Who Did the Cowboys Lose/Add This Offseason?

The Cowboys were very active on the free-agent and trade market this offseason. The most-notable additions include: cornerback Kaiir Elam (formerly with the Bills), linebacker Jack Sanborn (Bears), defensive ends Dante Fowler (Commanders), Peyton Turner (Saints), and Solomon Thomas (Jets), guard Robert Jones (Dolphins), and running backs Javonte Williams (Broncos) and Miles Sanders (Panthers).

Dallas’ biggest subtractions from its 2024 roster include cornerback Jourdan Lewis, tackle Chuma Edoga, and running back Rico Dowdle.

When Will the Rest of the NFL Schedule Be Released?

Fans of the other 30 teams in the league will have to wait a little longer to know who their sides will face the opening week of the season (and the other 17, for that matter). The full NFL schedule release will take place at 8:00 pm ET on Wednesday, May 14.

The NFL will air a schedule-release show on NFL Network, NFL.com, the NFL app, and NFL+ on Wednesday.
