Maryland sports betting closed out a strong summer with more than $9 million in sports betting tax revenue for August, as the Old-Line State moves into the most lucrative sports betting time of the year.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported $434,220,458 in total sports betting handle for the month, with sportsbook operators disclosing a 12.1% hold rate in August.

The state also added its 12th live online sports betting operator in late August, with bet365 undergoing a successful controlled demonstration on Thursday, Aug. 28, and fully launching on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Maryland Moving into Lucrative Football Season

Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported $9,039,368 in sports betting tax revenue for August. The combined retail and online sports betting contribution to the state’s Blueprint Fund was more than $6.8 million, while more than $2.2 million in online sports betting proceeds went to the general fund.

August 2025’s sports betting handle increase by more than 15% compared with August 2024’s handle total of $377.4 million. Tax revenues increased by nearly 62% in August 2025 compared with August 2024’s tax revenue total of $5.6 million.

Retail sports betting operators contributed 15% of their taxable proceeds to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs. Online sports betting contributes 15% of their taxable proceeds to the Blueprint Fund and 5% to the state’s general fund.

Maryland sports betting operators generated $25,518,368 in tax revenues for the state over the summer, a nearly $8 million increase from last summer’s tax revenue total of $17,566,862. Maryland legislators helped add to the increased tax revenues after approving a bill in May to increase the state’s online sports betting tax rate from 15% to 20%.

Bet365 Fully Launches in Maryland

Maryland welcomed its 12th live online sports betting operator in late August, as bet365 fully launched in the state on Saturday, Aug. 30. It demonstrated a successful controlled demonstration earlier in the week to receive its sports betting license. The operator partnered with the Charles County-based Riverboat on the Potomac to access the Maryland sports betting market.

Maryland currently has 12 online sports betting platforms and 12 retail sportsbook locations.

In just two days of operation, bet365 reported nearly $1 million in online sports betting handle.
