  • The Yankees are -144 moneyline favorites in Game 2 of the ALDS versus the Blue Jays
  • Max Fried will toe the rubber for New York, while Toronto will counter with rookie Trey Yesavage

From the time it was set, most people expected a lengthy ALDS between the Yankees and Blue Jays. That’s why New York backers aren’t panicking after Toronto’s 10-1 victory in Game 1. Online sportsbooks are still bullish on this Yankees squad, pegging them as -144 moneyline favorites in the Game 2 MLB odds.

First pitch is scheduled for Sunday at 4:08 pm ET from Rogers Centre, in Toronto, Ontario, with FS1 providing the coverage and sunny, 75-degree game-time temperatures on deck.

New York Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays Predictions

I’m siding with the books in my Yankees vs Blue Jays prediction, trusting the pedigree of this New York team. The Yankees fell behind the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card, but staved off elimination twice en route to a series victory. They’ll send ace Max Fried to the mound on Sunday, which gives them a sizeable edge in the pitching matchup.

That’s because the Blue Jays will give the ball to rookie Trey Yesavage. The 22-year-old has just three MLB starts under his belt, which tells you a lot about the state of the Toronto rotation after Kevin Gausman. New York certainly had its chances against Gausman and the Blue Jays bullpen in Game 1, but squandered multiple golden opportunities, and left seven men on base.

As for the Toronto lineup, the bats came alive in Game 1 thanks to a pair of home runs by Alejandro Kirk. The Blue Jays catcher has gone deep five times in his last three games, dating back to the regular season, while Toronto also got a home run from Vladdy Guerrero Jr., and 2 hits and 2 RBI from Andres Giminez.

The Blue Jays chased Game 1 starter Luis Gil after only 2.2 innings, but the assignment will be significantly more difficult against Fried, a top AL Cy Young odds contender.

The lefty led MLB in wins this season, and was top-15 in ERA and WHIP. He was 2-1 in four regular-season starts versus Toronto, holding the Blue Jays to a .215 average. Fried was magnificent in his Wild Card Round start against Boston, and has plenty of postseason experience to lean on.

The 31-year-old has 13 career playoff starts, and 21 appearances. He helped the Braves win a World Series in 2021, and has averaged a strikeout per inning in postseason play.

Yesavage, meanwhile, is as unproven as a playoff starter can be. He looked good in two of his three regular-season outings, but struggled with his control each time. He issued seven walks in only 14 innings of work, and putting runners on base is typically a recipe for disaster versus New York, Game 1 notwithstanding.

The Yankees were among the league leaders in slugging and OPS with men on base this season. Their offense is the primary reason they’re a World Series odds contender, and I’m confident they’ll bounce back against Yesavage. New York averaged nearly 5 runs per game versus Toronto this season, and a fresh-faced rookie plus a run-of-the-mill Blue Jays bullpen won’t be enough to slow them down in Game 2.

NYY Yankees vs TOR Blue Jays Props

As for the Yankees vs Blue Jays props, I’m taking over 0.5 hits for leadoff man Trent Grisham. No New York batter will have more plate appearances, while only Aaron Judge has better numbers versus right-handed pitcher like Yesavage.

Grisham posted a .251 ISO and .869 OPS against righties this season, while 27 of his 34 home runs and 56 of his 74 RBI came versus them as well.
