After nearly a week of Euro 2020 festivities, it is now time for teams to start playing their second round of matches. The first stage of the tournament was full of goals, cards and drama. However, the most significant moment took place in Denmark’s first match against Finland. Arguably one of Denmark’s biggest leaders and talents, Christian Eriksen, suffered a cardiac arrest on the field in front of family, friends and his teammates.
Medical staff, match officials and his fellow Danish counterparts handled the situation wonderfully, and each played a massive part in saving his life. The Denmark team doctor did comment and stated that Eriksen was “gone” before being brought back by a defibrillator.
After a 90-minute delay, the two teams were forced to play by UEFA, a decision that has been criticized by manager Kasper Hjulmand. The Danes went on to lose to Finland by a score of 1-0, thanks to a subdued Joel Pohjanpalo goal.

Now, Denmark plays Belgium, arguably one of the best sides not just in Europe, but the entire world. Roberto Martinez’s side cruised to a landslide victory over Russia and looked impressive in the process. Denmark desperately needs a result if they want a chance at advancing to the knockout rounds. But, one has to wonder what kind of headspace the players and managerial staff are in after a gut-wrenching, traumatic experience in the first matchday.

Romelu Lukaku Will Be a Nightmare to Defend
Furthermore, when it comes to Belgium, they have class all over the pitch. A few years ago Romelu Lukaku might not have been the first name on the team sheet lining up in the number nine position. Nonetheless, what a career resuscitation he has had. The 28 year-old has scored 40 goals in 54 appearances this year across all competitions, while also adding 12 assists. Not only is Lukaku a threat in the air, but in transition as well as he showed in his second goal against Russia.
Denmark vs Belgium Statistics
2.30 | Goals per game | 2.57 |
12.8 | Shots per game | 11.8 |
55.0% | Possession % | 58.9% |
85.6% | Passing % | 87.8% |
Ultimately, it will be up to Denmark captain Simon Kjaer, Andreas Christensen and Kasper Schmeichel in net to stop the Inter Milan forward. Aside from Lukaku, Belgium can always turn to Thorgan Hazard, Thomas Meunier, and Youri Tielemans for a spark of creativity.
Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City midfielder missed the first match against Russia due to an injury he picked up in the Champions League Final, but is reportedly back in training and could feature.
Can Denmark Make a Recovery in Copenhagen?
Additionally, the main question for this match is will Denmark be mentally prepared for this game? In the second half against Finland they looked off the pace and rightfully so. Sloppy defending and a missed penalty from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ultimately lost Denmark the game, and it is tough to tell if that mental fatigue will carry over or not. It is safe to say that in front of their home fans on Thursday, any result will be accepted.
🙌 Christian Eriksen has released a statement from hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark v. Finland on Saturday:

Historically, these teams have only played each other twice in the past 20 years. Both games were a part of the new Nations League format, and saw Belgium win both fixtures by a combined score of 6-2.
Denmark vs Belgium Best Bet
Overall, the best bet here is the Belgium moneyline at +112. In all fairness, you cannot expect much out of Denmark for the rest of this tournament, as they did not just lose a leader, but also an extremely experienced playmaker. Now they have to play against one of the best sides in the world, who are on form, which to me seems like a very tough ask.
Pick: Belgium moneyline (+112)
