Despite Ohio State appears to be a heavy favorite to win the Big Ten Conference in 2014, four other teams have a fair chance to win the title, and that makes the Conference one to bet on this season.
Here are the College Football Betting Odds To Win the Big Ten Conference:
Ohio State Buckeyes -125:
Any team under head coach Urban Meyer will always seek for greatness, and on his third year with the Buckeyes, he’s only looking at the Conference title as a step towards the National Championship.
Meyer knows his team is tied to what QB Braxton Miller does on the field; he’s the playmaker and the reason they could go the first time College Football playoffs.
“When he came in, he wanted to clean out Ohio State,” defensive tackle Michael Bennett said about what Meyer has done since he got the job. “He thought we weren’t very good guys and wanted to get rid of all the refuse. Now he has kind of slowed down on that warpath thing. He’s starting to get to know the guys a lot better.
With Meyer, Ohio State has 24-2 record in two seasons, yet they haven’t won the Big Ten Conference since 2009.
Michigan State Spartans +400:
Of course, it will be rude to just dish out the current champions. The Michigan State Spartans have out together a tremendous football program, but the betting odds don’t think they can do it two years in a row.
“We’re right where we need to be right now, we just need to stay healthy and not get ahead of ourselves, ” head coach Mark Dantonio said. “Really, as I told our young players, this week — although it will feel like a year — really this week will define whether you play or not.”
In order to repeat; their defense need to stay at the same level: a year ago they were 3rd best in points against in the nation.
Wisconsin Badgers +350
The Badgers had a three-season streak winning the Conference title before Michigan State cut it last season. Wisconsin is hard to beat because of their defense (6th best in the nation in points against in 2013), and their rushing attack (8th in rushing yards in 2013).
The problem for the Badgers is they need to put a name to the starting QB soon, and coach Gary Andersen hasn’t been impressed by any of the candidates.
Nebraska Cornhuskers +600
After an 8-4 record in 2013, Nebraska is a long shot to win the Big Ten title but they remain a hard team to beat. The Cornhuskers have been around since 2011, and have been competitive, but they haven’t stroke the Conference by winning a title.
Michigan Wolverines +1000
Unless we see an exciting season by the Michigan Wolverines, this should be coach Brady Hoke last season in the job. I’m putting Michigan here as a sign of respect, but Hoke’s program seem to be regressing.
The Rest:
- Iowa +1400
- Northwestern +3500
- Minnesota +5000
- Indiana +7000
- Maryland +10000
- Rutgers +20000
- Illinois +7500
- Purdue +25000
