- Norwegians Anders Mol and Christian Sorum are the +200 favorites to win the Olympic men’s beach volleyball as quarterfinals get underway on Wednesday, August 3
- They’ll face Russia’s Ilya Leshukov and Konstantin Leshukov, who upset the Norwegians in pool play
- Qatar’s Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse face Italy’s Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai in a battle of unbeaten teams
The Beachvolley Vikings remain the choice to conquer all, even though the one team that’s conquered them stands in their immediate path.
Olympic men’s beach volleyball quarterfinal action is slated to begin on Wednesday, August 3. Norway’s tandem of Anders Mol and Christian Sorum were the pre-tournament favorites and they retain that status. The so-called Beachvolley Vikings are the +200 betting choice to win the gold medal.
However, they’ll face a challenging quarterfinal matchup. Russia’s Ilya Leshukov and Konstantin Leshukov beat the Norwegians to win Pool A in the group phase of the Olympic tournament.
The Russians are one of three unbeaten teams left in the tourney. The other two squads – Qatar’s Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse face Italy’s Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai – are clashing in another quarterfinal matchup.
Quarterfinal action gets underway at 8:00 am ET on Wednesday.

Beachvolley Vikings Back On Track
Rebounding from their pool play loss to Leshukov and Semenov, Mol and Sorum defeated Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands in the round of 16. It was a 21-17, 21-19 straight-set victory.
The Russians kept rolling. Leshukov and Semenov took out the Grimalt cousins, Esteban and Marco of Chile by consecutive 21-16 margins.

The win by Leshukov and Semenov over World #1 Sorum and Mol ended a three-match losing skid against the Norwegians. That skid dated back to 2018. Sorum and Mol are 6-2 over their past eight matches.
Both losses were to Russian teams. Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy beat them in Gstaad just prior to the Olympics.
Pick: Sorum/Mol (NOR) -400
Battle of Unbeatens
Qatar’s Tijan and Younousse are the second betting choice to win the gold medal at +340. Italy’s unbeaten tandem of Lupo and Nicolai isn’t getting the same level of love from the oddsmakers. They’re at co-sixth in the outrights at +1400.

Nicolai and Lupo won a hard-fought 22-20, 21-18 victory over Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek of Poland in the round of 16. That improved their record to 4-0.
Tijan and Younousse ended up working even hard to overcome Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nicholas Lucena. Dropping the first set 21-14, the Qataris rallied for 21-19, 15-11 verdicts to take the match.
Reigning Olympic silver medalists Nicolai and Lupo are 3-1 against Tijan and Younousse.
Pick: Nicolai/Lupo (ITA) +137
World Championship Rematch
Russia’s Krasilnikov and Stoyanovskiy defeated Germany’s Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler to win the 2019 FIVB world championship. Including that match, the Russians are a perfect 4-0 against the German tandem.

Wickler and Thole put on their rally caps and won 17-21, 21-15, 15-11 over Americans Jake Gibb and Tri Bourne in round of 16 action. Krasilnikov and Stoyanovskiy were 22-20, 21-17 victors over Spain’s Adrain Gavira Collado and Pablo Herrera Allepuz.
Krasilnikov and Stoyanovskiy are situated #2 in the FIVB rankings for 2021. Their world championship title qualified them to compete in Tokyo.
Pick: Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy (ROC) -175
Brazilian Two-Step
At Rio in 2016, Brazilians Bruno Schmidt and Alison Cerutti combined to win a home-court gold medal. They split up and both made it to Tokyo with different partners.
In the round of 16, Latvia’s Edgars Tocs and Martins Pjavins sent Schmidt and Evandro Oliveira packing 21-19, 21-18. That earned them a date with Cerutti and Alvaro Morais Filho in the quarterfinals.

Cerutti and Morais Filho were round of 16 winners against Mexico’s Jose Luis Rubio Camargo and Josue Gaston Gaxiola Leyva. They took a 21-14, 21-13 decision.
In their only previous meeting, Cerutti and Morais Filho swept Tocs and Pjavins 21-19, 21-15. That was at a 2019 FIVB event in Espinho. Oddly enough, Tocs and Pjavens beat Schmidt and Evandro in Espinho prior to suffering their setback at the hands of the other Brazilian pair.
Pick: Cerutti/Morais Filho (BRA) -275
