Despite Prediction Market Threat, Several States Reporting Record Sports Betting Numbers

Despite worries over prediction markets and their potential impact on sports betting, several states are reporting record sports betting numbers this fall, resulting in some of the highest handle and tax revenue totals ever recorded.

Millions of customers are purchasing millions of dollar worth of sports event contracts, but so far the impact to state sports betting markets has been minimal, as several state gaming commission have reported record handle and revenue totals over the last several months.

New York, Maryland, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Ohio have all reported either record setting sports betting revenue or handle totals in their markets this fall.

Maryland Reports Record November

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, November was most profitable month ever for Maryland sports betting. The commission reported Maryland sports bettors wagered $720,180,853 in November and took in more than $19 million in tax revenues, the highest tax revenue total in the state’s four year sports betting history.

While Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) did sign a bill into law this June to increase the state’s online sports betting tax rate from 15% to 20%, which has certainly led to higher sports betting tax revenues this year, both gross gaming revenue and handle totals have increased in the 2026 fiscal year.

To date in fiscal year 2026, Maryland sports bettors have wagered more than $2.9 billion, a 17.3% increase in total handle compared with the $2.4 billion wagered to date in fiscal year 2025. The same is true for gross gaming revenues, as the state has reported $316.18 million to date in the fiscal year compared with $267.1 million in fiscal year 2025.

New York Smashes Sports Betting Records in Fall

New York just completed its most successful two month sports betting run in the state’s history. The New York State Gaming Commission reported $280,556,234 in online sports betting revenue in November, setting a new record for the state and topping the previous record of $248,906,754 this past May.

Over the span of October and November, New York sports betting brought in $519,301,983 in sports betting revenue, by far the most revenue brought in over two months.

At the state’s 51% tax rate, New York brought in a combined $264,844,011 in tax revenue for October and November. Additionally, New York sports bettors wagered more than $5.24 billion in the last two months, another state record.

North Carolina Continues Massive Two Month Run

Add North Carolina to the list of states setting sports betting records this fall. The North Carolina Lottery Commission recently reported state sports bettors wagered the most they ever have in a single month in the state’s sports betting history, placing $791.6 million in bet in November, topping the previous handle record set in October.

North Carolina sports betting brought in $16.7 million in tax revenues in November, the second highest monthly mark set since the April 2024 tax revenue total of $18.9 million.

Across October and November, North Carolina sports betting customers have placed $1.57 billion in online sports bets and the state has taken in a total of $30,794,730 in tax revenues, both records in the Tar Heel State.

Ohio, Massachusetts Both Report Handle Records

Both Massachusetts and Ohio have reported record-breaking sports betting handle totals this falls.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported commonwealth sports betting customers wagered $892.1 million in November, a record in the state, surpassing the previous handle record of $800.2 million set just the month before in October.

In the last two months, Massachusetts sports betting saw a whopping $1.6 billion in total handle, the most ever for the state across a two month span, and has taken in more than $24.67 million in tax revenues.

Ohio has experienced similar handle success in the last month. According to the Ohio Casino Control Commission, customers bet $1,134,959,970 in total handle for November, a new handle record in the Buckeye State.

Over October and November, Ohio sports betting resulted in more than $2.1 billion in handle, the most ever bet across two months in the state.
