  • Here’s a quick breakdown of how much money Maryland could bet on the Super Bowl

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us, and with Maryland online sports betting available across the Old Line State, Marylanders are formulating their first mobile app bet slips for the big game.

As one of the most active wagering markets in the US, Maryland sports bettors will help drive record betting volume on this year’s Super Bowl. The Baltimore Ravens may have exited the NFL Playoffs in the Wild Card round this year, but that won’t slow the excitement around betting Super Bowl 57 by much.

Let’s investigate how much money Maryland could bet on Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Maryland Expected to Drive Record Super Bowl Betting Handle

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, the Old Line State wagered a total of $441,481,779 through January 2023. While February is the shortest month of the year, the Super Bowl typically drives an increase in sports betting handle, and the American Gaming Association (AGA) is forecasting massive betting volume for this year’s big game.

Estimated MD Super Bowl 57 Betting Handle: $50 – $75 million

The AGA recently released results from their annual Super Bowl wagering survey, and they estimate 50.4 million Americans will wager up to $16 billion in 2023. That massive figure is more than double last year’s projection of $7 billion, and this new record includes legal sports betting sites, offshore sportsbooks, bookies, and party events such as Super Bowl squares.

While the $16 billion figure from the AGA is a staggering number, the actual Super Bowl betting volume going through Maryland will be much lower. We estimate that sports bettors in Maryland will wager anywhere from $50 million to $75 million on Super Bowl 57.

The top five states in terms of Super Bowl sports betting handle typically see between $100-$150 million in total wagers on the big game each year, and while Maryland is a newly-launched online sports betting market, it likely won’t crack the top five this year.

States like Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Ohio will make up the top five this year. Sports bettors are projected to wager between $80-$100 million on the Super Bowl in Ohio this year, and Maryland will likely be right behind them at $50-$75 million in total Super Bowl wagers.

Emerging MD Sports Betting Market Ready for Super Bowl 57

Having launched online sports betting on Nov. 23, 2022, Maryland will see a much higher volume of wagers than they did last year. Maryland saw just $25,526,148 through the whole month of February 2022 when retail sports betting was the only option. This is the first year Maryland sports bettors can use Super Bowl betting apps to wager on the championship game, meaning the betting handle should be more than double the results from 2022.

The Baltimore Ravens didn’t make it to the finals, but with MD sports bettors able to claim the best Super Bowl betting promotions through their mobile devices for the first time, the excitement will be palpable. Maryland sports bettors can’t go wrong wagering on the big game this year provided they’re betting responsibly.

When all is said and done, we expect Maryland will wager between $50-$75 million in total on Super Bowl 57.
