  • Arizona is shaping up to be one of the biggest sports betting markets in the country
  • There’s reason to believe AZ will pull in at least $100 million in bets through September
  • Arizona sports betting officially launches on September 9

The Grand Canyon State is set to become a wagering hotbed when Arizona online sports betting launches on September 9. With over 7 million Arizonans who call the desert home, local pro sports teams from every major league, and up to 20 sportsbooks ready to launch, Arizona could draw a huge betting handle in the month of September and beyond.

While it’s difficult to guess exactly how much money will be wagered on Arizona sports in the first month of betting, we can look at a few other states to get a better idea.

Comparing Sports Betting Launches in Other States

There are a couple important factors to consider when comparing sports betting launches in other states to project the kind of numbers a new state like Arizona could pull in.

The first is state population, as more people obviously means more sports bettors contributing to the monthly handle. Next is what month the sportsbook launched within, as schedules in every league are seasonal and leagues like the NFL tend to draw more bets.

Arizona Population: 7,151,502

AZ Sports Betting Launch Date: September 9, 2021

We’ll look at three examples from other states to get a projection for Arizona. Those three states are Tennessee, Indiana, and Virginia:

State Population First Full Month (Online Betting) First Month Handle
Virginia 8,631,393 February 2021 $265,778,306
Tennessee 6,910,840 November 2020 $131,444,523
Indiana 6,785,528 October 2019 $91,697,393

Judging by the figures above, there’s no chance the first month of Arizona sports betting sees anything less than $100 million wagered in total. The real question is which of these examples provides the most accurate estimate for the Grand Canyon State.

Indiana retail sports betting launched on August 30, but their first full month of online betting in October 2019 pulled in $91 million. Arizona sports betting is launching just a month earlier in the calendar year, and with a slightly higher population, Arizona should easily clear that number.

The numbers from Tennessee’s first full month of online betting certainly jump off the page. They launched just two months later in the calendar year, pulling in over $130 million. You can imagine that a ton of this action came from bettors wagering on the Tennessee Titans. The Grand Canyon State could see similar results from fans betting on the hometown Arizona Cardinals.

Virginia has the highest population of the three states we’re comparing, which partially explains the massive handle they saw in their first full month. They launched on January 21, 2021 when the NFL season was in full swing, and their first February saw a total handle of $265 million. They managed to do that even without the benefit of a local NFL team.

While Arizona sports betting will only see 22 days in the month of September after launching on the 9th, there is reason to believe they could have a huge debut.

All things considered, it’s safe to say Arizona will see between $120 and $150 million wagered on sports in total through September.
