Massachusetts Sports Betting Revels in Football Season

A rising tide lifts all ships, just as the NFL season lifts all sports betting tax revenues in the commonwealth.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported more than $512 million in total Massachusetts sports betting handle for the month of September, leading to nearly $10 million in sports betting tax revenue during the first month of the NFL season.

Online sports betting accounted for nearly $500 million of the total bet during the month.

DraftKings Dominates Month

DraftKings again notched the highest online sports betting handle and taxable gaming revenue among the state’s eight sports betting operators. DraftKings reported $290.1 million in total handle for the month and $27.5 million in taxable gaming revenue.

FanDuel reported $121.9 million in online sports betting handle for September and $13.9 million in taxable gaming revenue.

Betr again struggled in the commonwealth, reported $303,158 in total handle and only a little more than $28,000 in taxable gaming revenue for the month.

On the retail sportsbook side, Encore Boston Harbor topped all three casinos with $6.2 million in handle and more than $226,000 in total taxable revenue. Here are the full retail sports betting details for the month:

Daily Fantasy Sports Reported For Commonwealth

The MGC reported the state’s DFS totals for the month of September and reported $16.78 million in total handle. There are currently 16 licensed DFS operators in Massachusetts.

DraftKings led the way with $7.8 million in DFS handle, with PrizePicks notching the second spot with nearly $3.6 million in handle.

In total, the state collected $286,272 in DFS taxes for September.

Massachusetts Gaming Commission Interim Executive Director Todd Grossman  recently said the commission will evaluate daily fantasy sports (DFS) offerings in the commonwealth as DFS operators are recently experiencing increased scrutiny for their offerings nationwide.

Grossman revealed the commission would begin a review of DFS operator and offerings in the state in light of several public examinations across the country.
