New Jersey public colleges and universities are no longer permitted to enter into sports betting partnerships with gaming companies.
Gov. Phil Murphy (D) recently signed A4113 into law, which prohibits any New Jersey public college or university from entering into sports betting partnerships with gaming companies.
New Jersey legislators are bringing state schools in line with other public colleges in Louisiana, Colorado, and Michigan that have cancelled agreements or partnerships with sports betting companies.
Students Vulnerable to Compulsive Gambling
The legislation, which has an identical Senate counterpart in S2155, is effective immediately. The bill prohibits partnerships between public school and sports betting companies from including direct advertising or marketing to students enrolled in the institution.
The includes direct advertising or marketing at on-campus locations and off-campus locations associated with the school, and any electronic advertising or marketing explicit directed to students enrolled in the institution.
“The proliferation of sports betting by college students is a troubling trend that can have a destructive impact on their lives,” said Sen. Joe Cryan (D-20), sponsor of S2155, in a release. “Young people are especially vulnerable to compulsive gambling and can have a difficult time breaking the habit once it becomes ingrained. This will help protect them from the negative influences of advertisements that promote the practice. Our college campuses should be places for learning, not underage gambling.”
The following schools will be barred from entering into a sports betting partnership:
- Atlantic Cape Community College
- Bergen Community College
- Brookdale Community College
- Burlington County College
- Camden County College
- County College of Morris
- Cumberland County College

College Player Prop Betting Ban Still Being Considered
New Jersey legislators are also considering legislation to completely bar the practice of betting on college player props in the Garden State.
Sen. Kristin M. Corrado’s (R-40) bill, S3080, which calls for a complete prohibition of bets on college player-specific props in the state, is still under consideration.
The New Jersey Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee unanimously approved the bill last month, moving it forward to the Senate floor for consideration.
According to the legislation, the new law will require the following:
“A sports wagering licensee shall not offer or accept any wager on a player-specific proposition bet on any collegiate sport or athletic event.”
After introducing the bill last year, Corrado took to social media and said the bill will increase player safety and reduce harassment stemming from sports bets.
“Prop bet have led to a rise in the harassment of student-athletes and have threatened the integrity of college sports. This bill will ban player-specific prop betting in New Jersey, which will help make college athletic events safer for all participants,” she said on “X.”
