College basketball player props are some of the most popular March Madness betting markets at top-rated sports betting apps. In the states they’re available, anyway.
Twenty legal sports betting states restrict college player props in some way, with 12 banning them altogether.
Before you start planning how you will be betting on March Madness, know the restrictions in your state, and other options that could be available to you.
States That Ban College Player Props During March Madness
Betting on college sports is a major chunk of the industry, especially during March Madness. But whether they were written into original rules, or added later by state legislatures, college prop bans are spreading to states throughout the country.
Here are the states where college player props are completely banned:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Louisiana
- Massachusetts
- Maryland
- Mississippi
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Virginia
- Vermont
There are eight other states where player props are available, but come with some restrictions.
In Indiana, bettors can bet on college player props, but only pre-game, as no live player props are available. In the following seven states, you cannot bet on player props for players within your state:
- Connecticut
- Iowa
- Illinois
- Missouri
- New Jersey
- Washington
- Washington, D.C.
College Sports Betting Rules in My State
Some states have restrictions on college sports betting that go beyond player props. In Massachusetts and Vermont, you can only bet on teams within the state during tournament play.
The following states, however, ban betting on teams in their state at all times:
- Connecticut
- Illinois
- New Jersey
- New York
- Virginia
- Washington
- Washington, D.C.
New Jersey takes it a step further, not allowing bettors to wager on games played within the state’s borders.
Where Can I Bet on College Player Props?
There are just seven states in the US where there are no restrictions on college player prop betting. So, if you live in one of the following states, consider yourself lucky:
- Arkansas
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Michigan
- North Carolina
- West Virginia
- Wyoming

Other Options for Betting on College Props
If you find yourself in a state where you will not be allowed to bet on March Madness props, there are options.
Between Prediction Markets and daily fantasy sports sites, you can find prop-like bets. At Prediction Markets, player props aren’t very common, as most sports markets are limited to games and futures.
But at the best US DFS apps, Pick’Em games and drafts allow you to make selections of players and win real money based on their performance.
Draft contests are legal in most US states. The only exceptions are: Washington, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Connecticut and Maine.
DFS Pick’Em contests are not as widely available, but you can play them in the following states:
- Alaska
- Georgia
- Indiana
- Minnesota
- Nebraska
- North Dakota
- New Mexico
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- Texas
- Utah
