- Sosa vs Rhodes goes Saturday, August 10th at 8:00 PM ET
- Will Sosa notch his third straight win?Â
- Can Rhodes score his biggest career victory?Â
Sosa vs Rhodes tops the marquee at Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This weekend’s card is a co-feature from Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc and Top Rank.
This bout wasn’t initially slated to be the main event, though. A freak injury to Carl Frampton put him out of action and Sosa vs Rhodes was thrust to the top spot on the card. The 10 round super featherweight contest will be broadcast on ESPN+. Check out the betting odds and my fight prediction below.
Sosa vs Rhodes Odds
Fighter | Odds |
---|---|
Jason Sosa | -360 |
Haskell Lydell Rhodes | +270 |
*Odds taken 08/10/19
Sosa has held the WBA super featherweight title and was able to defend it successfully. Of his three career losses, though, Sosa has suffered two of them in his last four. Those losses were back-to-back against elite pugilists in Yuriorkis Gamboa and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Sosa was able to rebound with back to back wins in his last two fights.
Rhodes is coming in somewhat unheralded but I think that’s a mistake. Rhodes has a crafty style, has captured the vacant USBA Southern Region Light Title, and puncher’s chance is always a thing. That being said, I have Sosa all night.
Sosa is Too Much For Rhodes
Rhodes doesn’t have any kind of noteworthy knockout rate. So he likely won’t be able to land the kind of shots on Sosa that are necessary to stave off the former WBA champion.
Not that Sosa’s KO rate is exemplary either, but I think he has the advantage in power between the two. I think Sosa will be able to utilize that to get the respect of Rhodes. So he can most effectively optimize his clean boxing mechanics to put on a clinic.

Rhodes has never been stopped and I don’t see that changing here. I could see a unanimous decision going the way of Sosa.
Sosa has been talking about getting goosebumps just contemplating the kind of performance he believes he’ll have on Saturday. Jason Sosa has won world titles and competed against world champions. He would like to jettison himself back into that rarified air with a win here over Rhodes.
Sosa vs Rhodes Tale of the Tape
22-3-4 | Record | 27-3-1 |
15 | Knockouts | 13 |
5’6 | Height | 5’5 |
67″ | Reach | 69.5″ |
Javier Fortuna, Nicholas Walters, Stephen Smith | Significant Wins | Yakubu Amidu, Ira Terry, Miguel Angel Huerta |
orthodox | Stance | orthodox |
The big difference-maker will be the quality of competition each fighter has had. Sosa has been a world champion and fought at the highest level possible. Rhodes can’t necessarily say that. For Sosa vs Rhodes, I edge it to Sosa this Saturday.
Pick: Sosa (-360)
