  • Ortiz Jr vs Orozco goes Saturday, August 10th at 7 PM ET
  • Can Ortiz Jr knockout his 14th straight opponent?
  • Will the tenured Orozco prove too much for the young upstart?

Ortiz Jr vs Orozco emanates from Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Golden Boy Promotions is putting on this card and these two pugilists are in the main event. This is an intriguing bout as Golden Boy seems to be looking to position Ortiz Jr as their next star.

This is especially significant with Canelo Alvarez, Golden Boy’s golden goose, at odds with the promotion presently. Orozco is a stern test, though. He has the experience edge, has been in world title fights, and has captured some notable national belts. Check out the betting odds and my bout breakdown below.

Ortiz Jr vs Orozco Odds

Fighter  Odds
Vergil Ortiz Jr -1100
Antonio Orozco +650

*Odds taken 08/10/19

Ortiz jr has a 100% knockout rate and has an unblemished 13-0 record. Orozco represents a stiff test in this regard as he has never been knocked out as a pro.

Orozco also has great fundamentals and was an exemplary amateur boxer scoring victories over Mexican Olympian, Jessie Vargas and U.S. Olympian, Javier Molina.

Also, Ortiz jr is 21 while Orozco is 31. That’s not to necessarily say Ortiz jr will have the youth and speed advantage. He very well may but Orozco could have the experience edge, as 31 is that perfect time where a boxer is most composed/mature and is at the height of their athletic powers.

Ortiz Jr vs Orozco will make for an intriguing bout but I have Ortiz Jr.

Ortiz Jr Maintains His Flawless Knockout Percentage

Vergil Ortiz Jr will also enjoy quite the raucous reaction from the partisan crowd. Grand Prairie is Ortiz Jr’s hometown and he’s looking forward to putting on a show for the Texas faithful.

It’s the first time getting a hometown fight for Ortiz Jr and he’s admittedly ecstatic about it.

Some pundits feel that Ortiz Jr has recently leveled up from great prospect to serious contender. Ortiz Jr is a total package fighter who seems to be improved by marked amounts each time out.

He has all the tools including raw power, high boxing IQ, and laser-sharp accuracy. Each time he gets in the ring is only adding to the composure and it reflects in the impressive performances of Ortiz Jr up until this point.

Ortiz Jr feels settled in at welterweight and has big aspirations in the weight class. He wants to get title shots within the next two years and face the division’s big names.

Orozco is certainly a quality gatekeeper and will be a good litmus test to gauge how Ortiz Jr can do against those upper echelon welterweights. Ortiz Jr vs Orozco goes live on DAZN and I’m picking the former over the latter.

Pick: Ortiz Jr (-1100)
