Big Ten rivals clash in Houston, Texas, on Thursday night as the #4 Nebraska Cornhuskers (28-6, 15-5 Big Ten) take on the #9 Iowa Hawkeyes (23-12, 10-10 Big Ten) in the South Region Sweet 16. The winner will advance to face either #2 Houston or #3 Illinois in Saturday’s Elite Eight.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm CT/7:30 pm ET at the Toyota Center. Broadcast coverage is available on TBS, truTV, and HBO Max.
I has used Sportradar’s A.I. prediction model to generate an ATS pick and a game-total pick. The two computer-model predictions are set out in the table below, along with the sportsbooks/prediction markets currently offering the best price.
Nebraska vs Iowa A.I. Predictions & Picks
The model likes the underdog Hawkeyes to cover in a low-scoring game that stays under the 131.5-point total. The best price for both picks is currently available at prediction site Kalshi.
The two regular-season meetings between the teams yielded the following results:
- 57-52 Iowa win at home on Feb 17
- 84-75 OT Nebraska win at home on Mar 8
Below, readers can find the A.I.’s justification for both of its Nebraska/Iowa predictions.
A.I. Game-Total Pick: Under 131.5 (+100 at Kalshi)
A.I. Rationale: “How do the two teams stack up against each other? The biggest takeaway is the absolute parity on the defensive end of the floor between two elite units. Nebraska allows just 65.8 points per game and ranks sixth in the nation in defensive efficiency at KenPom. Iowa is 31st but yields just 66.0 points per game thanks to a slow pace (361st).
The teams’ combined defensive average of 131.8 points against per game is slightly over the under the 131.5-point total but when you add in the defensive intensity and slower pace that comes with high-stakes Sweet 16 games, the under is the best bet. Both defenses know how to string together stops.”
A.I. ATS Pick: Iowa +2.5 (-114 at Kalshi)
A.I. Rationale: “Iowa has the momentum to keep this game tight from the opening tip. The primary mismatch lies in offensive execution; Nebraska outscores Iowa 77.2 to 74.9 on average, boasting a +11.3 point differential. They comfortably pull away from opponents when their outside shots fall. However, Iowa’s +8.9 point differential proves they rarely get blown out. They keep games highly competitive deep into the second half.
Because I project a gritty, defensive-minded struggle in this Big Ten rock fight, taking the points is the safest ATS play.”
