They get a third shot to get in the win column this year on Tuesday, November 15th when they host the Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-0, 0-1 ATS) at the KFC Yum! Center in Kentucky. This game will tip off at 6:00 pm ET with Louisville the 6.5-point favorite at home.

Appalachian State High-Scoring Offense

Are the Appalachian State Mountaineers going to be an offensive juggernaut this season? Obviously, two games isn’t close to a large enough sample size to accurately assess that, but the early trends are pointing in that direction.

It doesn’t matter if you’re playing a Division III team or not, putting up 142 points in 40 minutes on the court is something to marvel at whether you’re Appalachian State or one of the teams that are favored in the March Madness tournament odds.

The Mountaineers also went over the total in their second game, although they needed overtime to get there against North Carolina Central. They took that game 79-74 with four players scoring in double figures. It looks like this squad has a proclivity to dial up from long distance as 50% of their field goal attempts in their first two games have come from beyond the arc.

So far, that offensive strategy has paid off with the Mountaineers shooting 37.5% from three-point land, but it could backfire if they become dependent on long balls for scoring. Last year, they shot 33.5% from deep, which ranked them 184th in the nation.

Louisville Cardinals Betting Analysis

This couldn’t be the start that Payne envisioned for his career at Louisville when he got the job. Losses to Bellarmine and Wright State don’t paint a pretty picture for this Cardinals squad, even if they were only by a point each.

There’s a reason why Louisville has the longest odds to win the ACC Title, but a third straight loss to a lesser opponent will weigh heavy on this side.

Guard El Ellis is expected to do most of the scoring and facilitating for the Louisville offense this year. He carried the load in their last game against Wright State, scoring 29 points. On the other hand, he also turned the ball over eight times while dishing out just two assists.

According to KenPom, they have a 23.1% turnover rate which ranks them 285th out of all Division I schools. They’ll have to make a commitment to securing the ball if they hope to turn this early season slide around.

Appalachian State vs Louisville Pick & Prediction

This feels like about as much of a must win as you can have three games in to the college basketball season. A new coach losing three straight to start the campaign against much lesser opponents will have many up in arms. If you can’t beat Bellarmine, what’s going to happen when you go against conference opponents like Duke and North Carolina?

On the other side of things, Appalachian State has gotten off to a perfect 2-0 start, but Louisville will undoubtedly provide a much stiffer test than their other opponents.

For that reason, making a moneyline bet on Louisville feels like the safe play, but we also want to ride the wave of the early season offensive exploits of Appalachian State. How long will it last?
