  • Maryland is a 6.5-point favorite over Georgetown in college hoops tonight
  • The Hoyas were 6-2 ATS as road underdogs last season

College hoops are back in our lives and the spotlight shines on the battle of the DMV tonight. Georgetown (1-0) travels to Maryland (1-0), with both teams coming off impressive season debuts. Online sportsbooks are expecting the Terps to take care of business in the college basketball odds, but I see real value on the Hoyas against the spread.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm ET from the XFINITY Center, in College Park, MD, with FS1 providing the broadcast coverage.

Here are my Georgetown vs Maryland picks and predictions, plus the latest odds.

Georgetown vs Maryland Picks & Predictions

  • Georgetown +5.5 (-110) at BetMGM

The Hoyas are a team on the rise this season, after finishing with 18 victories last year, their most since 2019. Sharp money is all over Georgetown ahead of this matchup, driving the line down from +8.5 to +5.5 in most places.

It’s not hard to see why the Hoyas are a popular target. This team turned heads in the preseason, taking down some serious competition. They beat Wake Forest in a scrimmage behind closed doors, and then went into Lexington to take down preseason March Madness odds top-5 contender Kentucky. Georgetown beat the Wildcats by 14, holding Kentucky to just 70 points.

From a roster standpoint, star guard Malik Mack is back, as is much of the young core from last year. The Hoyas also added KJ Lewis in the transfer portal, who gives them energy and tenacious defense from the wing. Lewis led the charge in Georgetown’s season opening victory over Morgan State, scoring 14 points, while Mack chipped in 11 points and 4 assists.

The Hoyas haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament 2016, but this looks like their most promising roster since then. Head coach Ed Cooley has seen major improvement in his first two years, and his squad projects to finish in the top-six in the Big East.

As for Maryland, despite this being a true home game, it’s a dangerous spot. Buzz Williams is in his first season with the Terps, and the roster looks nothing like it did last year. They made significant investments in the transfer portal, brining in big Pharrel Payne, forward Elijah Saunders and guard Myles Rice.

Payne and Saunders started for Maryland in their season opener against Coppin State, helping lead the team to a 22-point win. The Terps built a 15-point first half lead and never looked back, but let’s not get too excited by a victory over Kenpom’s 363rd ranked team.

Maryland’s roster lacks experience playing together, and is rolling out a pair of freshman starters in their backcourt. That kind of inexperience can be exposed by an up and coming team like the Hoyas, and explains why the Terps are projected to finish outside the top-10 in the Big Ten this season.

Georgetown 2024-25 ATS Stats

ATS StatRecord
Overall 18-15-1
As an Underdog9-7
As a Road Underdog6-2

Sharp money is cratering the Georgetown vs Maryland spread, and the trends support the line move. Georgetown ended last season with a 55% cover rate, and was wildly valuable as road underdogs. They were 6-2 ATS as ‘dogs away from home, covering by an average of 1.5 points per game.

Georgetown vs Maryland Odds

If you’re looking bet on the Hoyas tonight, make sure you shop around. The bulk of the commercial sportsbooks have Georgetown listed as a 5.5-point underdog, but you can still grab the Hoyas at +6.5 over at Fanatics as of 1pm ET.

FanDuel is offering the best odds on Georgetown to pull off the outright upset at +220, while total bettors should choose their place to bet based on which side of the over/under they’re on. Under bettors need to head to Bet365 to grab under 146, while over bettors will want to wager on FanDuel to get a half point of value.
