No. 9 Iowa (24-12) has been the best story of March Madness, knocking off top-seeded Florida and fourth-seeded Nebraska to reach the Elite Eight for the first time in 39 years. Now Ben McCollum’s squad faces a familiar opponent in No. 3 Illinois (27-8), a team that beat them 75-69 back on Jan. 11.

The Illini just dismantled No. 2 Houston 65-55 on the same Toyota Center floor, holding the Cougars to 34% shooting while outrebounding them 43-34. Illinois enters as a 6.5-point favorite in the college basketball odds, though some sportsbooks have already pushed the line to 7.

My Iowa vs Illinois prediction has the Illini winning and covering. I respect everything this Iowa team has accomplished, but the matchup profile heavily favors Illinois.

Start with the rebounding. Illinois ranks 20th nationally at 39.25 boards per game. Iowa sits 293rd at 25.20. That gap was the difference-maker when the Illini beat Houston on Thursday, as freshmen David Mirkovic and Keaton Wagler both posted double-doubles.

Both teams play at a crawling pace, which plays into Illinois’ hands. The Illini have far more offensive weapons in a half-court grind, and the Hawkeyes are just 3-8 away from home this season.

The trends back Illinois, too. The Illini are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral-site games and 4-1 ATS in their last five NCAA Tournament games. Illinois has also covered all five of the last five meetings against Iowa, winning by an average of 12 points in that stretch.

Game-Total Pick: Under 139 (-110 at Caesars)

The public is hammering the over, but I’m going against the grain. Iowa is the fifth-slowest team in the country, and Illinois ranks in the bottom quarter in tempo. Their Sweet 16 win over Houston featured just 58 possessions, and the Jan. 11 meeting between these teams finished at 144 combined.

The betting trends are overwhelming. The under is 9-2 in the Illini’s last 11 neutral site games, and has cashed in 27 of Illinois’ last 35 NCAA Tournament games. With an Elite Eight and Final Four berth on the line, expect cautious play early. I’d project a final around Illinois 70, Iowa 62.

Moneyline Pick: Illinois (-320 at FanDuel)

The juice is steep, but I’m confident enough in the Illini to include the moneyline as one of my Iowa vs Illinois picks. Brad Underwood is in his second Elite Eight in three years, and his team has posted a +66 point differential across three NCAA Tournament games. That’s the third-best mark by a Big Ten school entering the Elite Eight all-time.

Their stock keeps climbing in the March Madness championship odds, and a win tonight would put the Illini one game from a first-ever national title.

Freshman Keaton Wagler has been the engine, averaging 17.7 points and 4.3 assists per game while dropping 19 on Iowa in January. Croatian freshman Mirkovic broke the Illinois single-season freshman rebound record with 280 boards.

Junior Andrej Stojakovic, son of three-time NBA All-Star Peja, scored 13 off the bench against Houston and averages 13.5 per game. That depth is something Iowa can’t match.

Iowa’s run has been incredible. Senior Bennett Stirtz has been special, and Alvaro Folgueiras’ game-winning three against top-seeded Florida will go down as one of the great March moments.

But Stirtz has shot just 33.3% from the floor and 21.4% from three across three tournament games. If that inefficiency continues against a more disciplined Illinois defense, the Hawkeyes won’t have enough.
