Still alive for the Big Ten regular-season crown, the 17th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (22-7, 14-4 Big Ten) play their home finale Wednesday when they host the 13th-ranked Maryland Terrapins (22-7, 12-6 Big Ten). It’s the lone meeting between these teams in the regular season. Maryland has won the last two head-to-head meetings, but the Wolverines have won five straight against Maryland at home and are slight favorites tonight. Action gets underway at 6:30pm ET from the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, MI, with BTN providing the coverage.

Michigan had won eight of their previous nine until they were dusted by Illinois 93-73. While they haven’t lost many, their last three have been all blowout losses, losing by at least 13 points in each. Sitting second in the Big Ten at 14-4, a win over Maryland sets up a showdown with first-place Michigan State in the regular season finale for the conference crown.

Maryland got dumped by the Spartans to end its 4-game winning streak, but they bounced back with a close 68-64 win over Penn State last time out. At 12-6, the Terps are holding down the 4-spot in the conference. Both schools are likely locked into at-large berths in the NCAA Tournament, but they’re distance contenders in the March Madness odds: Maryland sits at +5000 odds, while Michigan is at +10000.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie is second on his team in scoring, and has the highest scoring prop of any Terp Wednesday at 16.5. The junior guard has been cleared that number three times in his last four outings, including a 19-point effort in the win over Penn State.

For the Wolverines, big man Vladislav Goldin tops all in scoring at 17.5 points, and he’s been on fire of late, scoring at least 20 points in four of his last five.

It should be an old school battle of centers, as Goldin will square up against Maryland’s Derik Queen. His scoring line is set at 15.5, and both centers are tied with the top rebounding prop at 9.5. Queen has been cleaning glass, picking up at least 10 rebounds in five of his six last games.

There’s still plenty for Maryland to play for as well, as a win keeps them in play for a Top 4 spot in the regular season, and with it, a double-bye in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.

The Terrapins are the Big Ten’s third highest-scoring team, pumping 82.1 points per game. They rank Top 5 in the conference in both field goal and three-point shooting.

Maryland also boasts one of the top scoring defenses in the Big Ten, allowing just 66.9 points per game, good for third. They’re a Top 10 team in KenPom’s defensive efficiency metric, and 16th overall.

And yet, they’re likely an underdog because playing close games has been a struggle. Their win against Penn State last time out was the first time in seven tries they’ve been able to win a conference game decided by six points or less.

On the flip side are the Wolverines, who, by sheer stats, are comparable but ranked lower than the Terps in most categories. They are scoring 79.1 points per game, ranking 41st in offensive efficiency at KenPom, and 21st in defensive efficiency, allowing 71.4 points per game.

However, Michigan is an impressive 11-1 in games decided by four points or fewer. Their ability to hang around and close out close games has them in position to land a regular season title.

That doesn’t make them a great cover, though: Michigan is just 6-9-0 against the spread as a home favorite.

This has all the makings of a trap game for the Wolverines. With a high stakes matchup on tap with their in-state rival, even a slight loss of focus could be trouble for for a Terrapins that’s too good to ever be looked over.
