Seton Hall is a 19-point home favorite in a game matching a pair of 21-win teams a year ago, although their point spread records were almost polar opposites. Seton Hall was 13-17-1 ATS, better than only UConn among Big East teams. Monmouth was 21-13 both SU and ATS.
Monmouth and Seton Hall were two of the best “under” plays in Division I last season. The total went under in 23 of Monmouth’s 34 games and was under in 21 of Seton Hall’s 31 games, which rounded to 67.7 percent in each case. They were the 10th and 11th teams most likely to go under, and he total was under in eight of the Pirates’ final nine games.
Seton Hall Brings Back Legend
Former Seton Hall point guard Shaheen Holloway takes over as coach for Kevin Willard after Holloway guided Saint Peter’s on its captivating run through the 2022 NCAA Tournament with victories over No. 2 seed Kentucky, No. 7 seed Murray State and No. 3 seed Purdue before falling to eventual national runner-up North Carolina in the Elite Eight.
Saint Peter's becomes the first team from New Jersey to reach the Sweet 16 since 2000.

Rangy point guard Kadary Richmond is the expected to be go-to guy on a team that lost its three leading scorers but stocked up through the portal. Richmond, 6-6, is the Hall’s leading returning scorer at 8.8 points per game and was named to the preseason All-Big East second team. He also averaged a team-high 4.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Richmond had one of best individual efforts in Division I last season, when he scored 17 consecutive points in a 90-87 victory over UConn. He finished with 28.
Forwards Alexis Yetna (8.1 points, 7.6 rebounds) and Tyrese Samuel (7.3 points, 5.2 rebounds) give Holloway some veterans up front, although Yetna remains sidelined because of a knee injury and it is not clear when he will return. The Pirates expect newcomers KC Ndefo, Al-Amir Dawes, Femi Odukale and Dre Davis to fit well. Grad transfer Ndefo, who followed Holloway from Saint Peter’s, was second team all-MAAC while averaging 10.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game for the Peacocks.

Clemson transfer Dawes averaged 11.3 points and 2.5 three-pointers per game, Pitt transfer Odukale average 10.8 points and 3.4 assists and Louisville transfer Dre Davis averaged 7.4 points in 23 starts a year ago. All are guards, which may give Richmond a chance to play more “2” this season, although his 4.1 assists
Holloway is preaching toughness to his new crew, a trait that should come in handy against a tough non-conference schedule that includes Iowa, Memphis, Rutgers and Kansas (and of course Saint Peter’s) before Christmas.
Monmouth Starting Anew
Monmouth is one of the four teams joining the Colonial this season, along with Stony Brook (America East), Hampton (Big South) and North Carolina A&T (Big South), and the Hawks face a major rebuilding job while at the same time stepping up in class from the Metro Atlantic.
Two of the top young coaches in our sport — Monmouth's King Rice and St. Peter's Shaheen Holloway — will face off in Saturday's MAAC title game.
Neither has ever been to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach.

King Rice’s Hawks had winning records in six of their last eight seasons in the MAAC, but they return only 18 percent of their playing time and will be without their top three scorers, all of whom averaged between 14.9 and 14.1 points per game. Former reserve forwards Myles Foster and Jarvis Vaughan and reserve guard Myles Ruth will be starting staples, but neither played more than 12 minutes a game or averaged more than 5.3 points.
The Hawks were picked to finish 10th in the CAA preseason coaches’ poll. The schedule is loaded — after Seton Hall, the Hawks will play at Virginia and at Illinois to conclude a three-game road trip. The visit Syracuse in December.
