#3 Illinois (25-8) and #2 Houston (30-6) both looked dominant in the second round, and now they’ll collide in a Sweet 16 showdown on Thursday in Houston. The Fighting Illini dismantled VCU behind balanced scoring and a massive rebounding edge, while the Cougars throttled Texas A&M.

Kelvin Sampson’s squad gets to play in its home city for a chance at the Elite Eight. Sportsbooks have installed Houston as a mid-single-digit favorite, and this one shapes up as a classic offense-vs-defense clash.

Texas A&M hung around early, trimming the deficit to 23-19 on a Josh Holloway three with 9:21 left in the first half. Houston answered with a 23-9 run to take a 46-28 halftime lead, and the game was never in doubt after that. The Cougars built a 31-point advantage in the second half.

Illinois Second-Round Recap

Illinois cruised past VCU 76-55. Brad Underwood’s squad led by as many as 23 points, shooting 48.1% from the floor and 36.4% from three. The Illini dominated the glass with a 42-25 rebounding advantage and held VCU to 33.3% shooting and a brutal 21.4% from deep (6-of-28).

The Ivisic brothers were a problem inside. Starter Tomislav and reserve Zvonimir gave Illinois a frontcourt advantage that VCU had no answer for. The Illini racked up five blocks and limited the Rams’ second-chance opportunities despite VCU grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.

Illinois vs Houston Sweet 16 Matchup Preview

This Sweet 16 matchup is a classic clash of strengths. Houston ranks 4th at KenPom with an elite defensive efficiency of 90.7 (4th nationally), while Illinois sits 7th with the 2nd-best offense in the country at 131.9 adjusted efficiency.

Houston’s net rating (34.76) edges Illinois (32.67), and the Cougars are 10-6 in Quad 1 games compared to the Illini’s 7-8. But Illinois has faced a slightly tougher schedule (22nd SOS vs. Houston’s 40th) and owns a far more potent attack.

The tempo battle will be fascinating. Both teams play slow — Houston ranks 351st in adjusted tempo, Illinois 276th. Something has to give when the Cougars’ suffocating defense meets the Illini’s explosive scoring ability.

Houston is making its seventh straight Sweet 16 and lost in last year’s national championship game to Florida. The Cougars won’t want to let this one get away on their home floor.
