Shockers vs Tigers Betting Trends

Friday night’s matchup marks the second meeting in as many seasons between these two clubs. The Tigers marched to a decisive 72-62 road victory over Wichita State as 4.5-point chalk last December, which marked the first clash between these squads since January 1951, and their fourth win in as many all-time matchups. Last season’s victory came amid an impressive 13-3 SU run to start the campaign.

However, the Tigers struggled down the stretch, going 3-7 SU and 2-8 against the spread over their final 10 contests, and have covered just twice during a middling 3-2 SU start.

The inconsistency that plagued the Shockers at the sportsbooks last season has carried over into the new campaign. While Wichita State has opened their schedule on a 4-1 SU run, they have fallen well short of covering in three of four outings as betting favorites, capped by Monday’s narrow 74-73 road win over UNLV as 1.5-point chalk, in which they trailed most of the way. The Shockers also saw the UNDER prevail in their first three outings, extending a 2020/2021 season-ending 6-2 run, before going well OVER the total in their past two.

Wichita State Shockers Outlook

The Shockers have plenty of work to do to overcome a pair of disappointing performances when they hit the hardwood on Friday night. Far from dominant while opening their schedule with a trio of wins, the Shockers have found themselves stalled in catch-up mode in their past two contests. Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, WSU needed an epic comeback to force overtime in their eventual 82-78 loss to Arizona.

The team also needed to overcome an 11-point second half deficit to eke out this week’s win over the Rebels, a contest in which they held the lead for fewer than five minutes. And with the exception of last week’s 65-51 rout of the Tarleton Texans, WSU has claimed victory by a combined margin of just 10 points in the team’s three other wins.

WSU’s early-season struggles have not helped the team make gains in the Kenpom ratings, where they lag at No. 89 in adjusted offense. Overall, the Shockers are averaging just 68.2 points per game, a step back from last season’s average of 72.4. However, the squad has received a lift from the recent performance of Tyson Etienne, who has rounded into form over his past two outings while averaging 27.5 points per game. However, the sophomore guard is just one of two Shockers shooters averaging double-digit points totals so far this season.

Missouri Tigers Outlook

The Tigers return to action looking to rebound after being dominated in an 81-58 loss to the visiting Florida State Seminoles as 9.5-point underdogs on Monday night. In addition to snapping a 2-0 SU run, the defeat marked the Tigers’ second bad beat so far this season after dropping a stunning 80-66 decision to the Kansas City Roos on home court as lofty 11-point chalk.

Sloppy play has played a huge role in Mizzou’s early-season fortunes. The Tigers have converted fewer than 39% of field goal attempts over their past two outings. And their 54-37 win over Northern Illinois had more to do with the Huskies’ inability to find the mark, with the Tigers converting on just 40.8% of attempts including a dismal 14.3% from beyond the arc.

One bright spot for Mizzou has been the steady play of Kobe Brown. The junior guard leads the team with 16.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game despite averaging fewer than 30 minutes of playing time this season.
