Michigan Sweet 16 Recap

Michigan beat Alabama 90-77 behind a dazzling all-around performance from Yaxel Lendeborg. The Big Ten Player of the Year finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, becoming the first Wolverine with a 20-10-5 line in the NCAA Tournament since Jimmy King in 1995.

The game was tight at the break after Labaron Philon Jr. scored eight straight points to give Alabama a 49-47 halftime lead. Lendeborg took over from there, igniting a second-half surge with a steal-and-assist on a Nimari Burnett fast-break dunk, then hitting a three and a driving layup to push the lead to eight.

Trey McKenney and Elliot Cadeau each scored 17 off the bench, while Roddy Gayle Jr. added 16. Michigan’s bench outscored Alabama’s 33-6. Philon Jr. was brilliant in the loss with 35 points, but it wasn’t enough.

Tennessee Sweet 16 Recap

Tennessee beat Iowa State 76-62 behind a dominant rebounding performance. The Vols crushed the Cyclones on the glass 44-24, including 16 offensive rebounds to Iowa State’s five. Rick Barnes’ squad shot 50.8% from the floor, dished 22 assists and blocked seven shots.

Iowa State played without forward Joshua Jefferson, and the Cyclones couldn’t overcome the second-chance points deficit despite cleaner ball-handling (11 turnovers to Tennessee’s 17).

Tennessee vs Michigan Elite Eight Matchup Preview

Michigan is the #2 team at KenPom with the best defense in the country (89.8 adjusted defensive efficiency) and a top-5 offense (127.9). Tennessee sits 15th with a net rating of +26.83 compared to Michigan’s +38.14.

Tennessee’s best path to an upset runs through the offensive glass. The Vols grab 15.8 offensive rebounds per game and score 16.3 second-chance points, both elite numbers. Michigan counters with 6.1 blocks per game and the nation’s best defensive rating, so something has to give inside.

The pace differential could be the biggest wildcard. Michigan plays at 72.5 adjusted tempo (25th nationally) while Tennessee grinds at 65.1 (304th). If Rick Barnes can slow this game down, the Vols keep it close. If Dusty May pushes the tempo, the Wolverines’ superior talent takes over. Michigan is one of the favorites in the March Madness championship odds and Lendeborg looks like the best player left in the tournament.
