Week 12 of the college football season provided plenty of nail-biting moments for the country’s top contenders. As a result, the most recent college football national championship odds paint a picture of a hectic Saturday.
The third and fourth ranked teams both had to sweat through comeback victories over conference opponents on Saturday. Both #3 Michigan and #4 TCU are lucky to escape Week 12 with their national championship hopes intact.
Elsewhere, Tennessee crashed out of the national championship odds altogether after a blowout loss to South Carolina.

TCU Outlasts Baylor
The comeback kids have done it again! Somehow, someway, Sonny Dykes’ charges continue to win football games.
Very few scenarios in all of football can top the drama from TCU rushing their field goal team onto the field in the closing seconds for Griffin Kell to knock a 40-yard kick through the uprights with the clock ticking.
All jokes about this aside, it’s impressive how smooth this operation was for TCU. This is probably practiced full speed in camp and then not again until it happens in a game. No substitution issues. Kicker was ready. Impressive for college ball. https://t.co/PF1jvhg6V1

Quarterback Max Duggan completed a gritty performance, leading his team down the field twice in the final 2:07 to pull off the stunning win.
However, the stellar play of the Horned Frogs defense down the stretch put the team in position to win. By forcing two consecutive Baylor three-and-outs, the TCU defense kept their team in contention in the College Football Playoff odds, and perhaps a National Championship run.
Incredibly, TCU may be the most battle-tested team in the country. By overcoming the best counter punches opponents have thrown their way week after week, the Horned Frogs may have finally proven to the College Football Playoff committee, and the nation, that they are more than worthy of a top-4 selection.
TCU welcomes Iowa State next weekend in a bid to finish their season undefeated. A likely trip to the Big 12 Title game would allow the Horned Frogs to pad their resume even further. The road to a national championship is filled with bumps and bruises but at +1400 odds, is anyone prepared to count this TCU team out?
Michigan Survives
By the skin of their teeth, the Michigan Wolverines came through a Week 12 home game versus Illinois to remain undefeated.
A first half injury scare to all-world running back Blake Corum seemed to cripple the Wolverines offense. After an opening touchdown drive, quarterback JJ McCarthy seemed unable to carry the offense.McCarthy has shown flashes of being the man to finally lead Michigan to a national championship. That being said, he’s completed just over 50% of his passes over the last month. Additionally, McCarthy has looked a shell of himself in the red zone, missing multiple wide open targets. McCarthy will have to play lights out football next week for the Wolverines to have any shot at a national championship.
Worryingly, Illinois may have proved that without their Heisman-hopeful superstar, this Michigan team is very beatable.

Thankfully, a last minute Jake Moody field goal proved to be enough to overcome the Illini. However, Jim Harbaugh’s team travel to the Horseshoe next week, for a massive win or be eliminated game with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Next week’s game represents the first time both Michigan and Ohio State will enter “The Game” undefeated since 2006. The stakes could not be higher.
With Michigan’s college football national championship odds at +1200, this week may be the final chance for gamblers to put wagers on the Wolverines at any form of value. A victory over the Buckeyes next Saturday will see the Wolverines national championship odds skyrocket.
