Arkansas vs Memphis Analysis
Arkansas enters this game after playing well against Ole Miss. Despite the loss, they kept the game close and still put up 35 points. The Razorbacks are averaging 49.67 points per game through three weeks,
A lot of that can be attributed to their rushing attack. Their offensive line has been impressive, even against Ole Miss last week. Then, quarterback Taylen Gren leads the country in total yards with 1,173. His dual-threat abilty has been on full display to start the year.
The Razorbacks are averaging 310 yards on the ground this season. Because of this ground game, the Hogs have been able to stay ahead of the chains, and they lead the nation in third-down conversions. If they continue to run the ball the way they have, they will be tough to stop on Saturday.
Memphis has looked great on the defensive side of the ball, averaging just 11 points per game. Granted, that was against Chattanooga, Georgia State, and Troy, but it is still impressive. They have not faced an offense with the firepower or the line that Arkansas has, though.
Their defensive line has been strong, and they have had a solid pass rush as well. They will not be able to stop Arkansas’s offense entirely, but they may be able to limit them and slow them down.
On the offensive side of the ball, Memphis has a sixth-year quarterback in Brendon Lewis. Lewis has been efficient through the air with a 73.3% completion percentage. He is also averaging 5.9 yards per carry on the ground and has two rushing touchdowns this season.
Arkansas struggled to defend Ole Miss’s aerial attack last week, and they are 118th in the country in rush success, so it will be interesting to see how Memphis moves the ball against Arkansas.
Arkansas vs Memphis Prediction
I have two picks and predictions for this non-conference game between Arkansas and Memphis.
Arkansas vs Memphis Pick #1: Over 60.5
I am predicting a lot of points to be scored in this game, so my best bet is Over 60.5.
As mentioned earlier, both of these teams can move the ball on the ground and can score quickly. Taylen Green is a walking highlight reel, and while Memphis’s defense has been good, they have struggled in tackling. They are ranked 134th in the country in tackling. Those are not great numbers against Green, who can make the best defenders in college football miss. There will be a lot of big plays on Saturday.
Arkansas is not the only team capable of big plays. Memphis is averaging over 218 rushing yards per game, and Sutton Smith is averaging six yards per carry. He already has four touchdowns this season, and has a great chance to break off some long runs against Arkansas’s rushing defense.
The Tigers have the offense to put up points in different ways, even if Arkansas tries to lock in on their rushing game. Lewis has been efficient as a passer and has played enough football to take advantage of the Razorback secondary. Expect fireworks in Memphis on Saturday.
- Arkansas vs Memphis Pick: Over 60.5 (-110)
Arkansas vs Memphis Pick #2: Memphis +7.5
I also believe that this game will be back and forth, so it will be closer than the point spread suggests.
Arkansas has looked really good to start the year, but so has Memphis. Even though this will be their first true test, they have done what they were supposed to do through their first three weeks of the season. That includes a 28-7 win over a Troy team that gave Clemson a scare in Death Valley.
While I expect a lot of points to be scored, Memphis could just need one or two big stops to cover this spread of over a touchdown. The first three weeks of the season have shown me a defense that is capable of doing that.
Memphis is at home and hosting an SEC team. This would be a huge win for their program and for their fans. If this game is close late, I expect the environment to get crazy and put all the pressure on Arkansas. 7.5 is too many points, so I am betting on the home underdog.
- Arkansas vs Memphis Pick #2: Memphis +7.5 (-115)
