Broncos QB Controversy?
Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier was benched after turning the ball over three times in the first quarter against Oregon State in the Broncos’ disappointing 34-17 season-opening defeat in Week 1. BSU head coach Andy Avalos inserted 6-6 redshirt freshman Taylen Green into the game, giving the visitors a spark. He missed a few open receivers and botched a couple of play calls — but he also looked like the fastest player on the field during a 74-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, he put his shoulder down and powered across the goal line to cut the Beavers’ lead to 10 points. This week, both are practicing with the 1s.

It would figure Bachmeier will be back under center against the Lobos, but Avalos now knows what Green can do in game action — against a possible bowl team from a Power 5 conference no less. Look for Green, a Texas native, to get touches against the Lobos.
One injury that could have a small effect on the Bronco offense: receiver Austin Bolt is out for the season with a leg injury after getting hurt on a special teams play against the Beavers..
Rocky Long (and Strong)
Former New Mexico head coach and current defensive coordinator Rocky Long is one of the more well-respected defensive minds in college football. His 3-3-5 scheme is unique and relies on presnap motion and disguised assignments to keep offenses guessing. The Lobos held Maine to just 118 total yards of offense in a 41-0 Week 1 victory — including just 22 yards allowed on the ground.

Offensively, New Mexico’s multifaceted rushing attack averaged 4.8 yards per carry while racking up 267 yards on the ground in the shutout win.
Lobos QB Miles Kendrick — a Kansas transfer — is also a threat on the ground. He accounted for 40 rushing yards against Maine he completed 14-of-17 passes for 170 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His favorite target is wideout Luke Wysong. The versatile athlete finished with 128 all-purpose yards in Week 1, going for 43 rushing yards and a touchdown while catching three balls for 51 yards and another trip to paydirt. He’s a player the Broncos need to account for on every play.
Boise State vs New Mexico Prediction
Boise State rides into Albuquerque on a six-game winning streak against the Lobos, dating back to 2017, and have won 22 straight conference openers. In the last 12 contests against the Lobos, the Broncos have dominated the series, 11-1.
Meantime, New Mexico is 5-15 in its past 20 regular season games as an underdog at home, and the Lobos are 9-11 against the spread. Boise State is 15-5 in its past 20 regular season games as the favorite on the road and 10-9-1 ATS. BSU will be desperate to prove its Week 1 effort was a fluke and come out strong — likely with a little Green sauce sprinkled in.
