The California Golden Bears (5-2 SU, 3-4 ATS) battle the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-5 SU, 1-6 ATS) in an ACC showdown this Friday, Oct. 24th.

Cal aims to build momentum after toasting Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels last week. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, limps in after a Week 8 bye following a frustrating loss to Georgia Tech.

Cal vs Virginia Tech is set to kickoff from Lane Stadium at 7:30 pm ET. Get in on the action and check out my Cal vs Virginia Tech predictions.

Virginia Tech’s glory from their upset win over NC State didn’t last long. The Hokies have been resoundly defeated by Wake Forest and aforementioned Georgia Tech.

The Hokies give up over 33 points per game, along with allowing opponents to complete 70% of passes for an otherworldly 8.9 yards per pass. Both of which rank in the bottom 10 in the country.

In fact, the Hokies are 134th in defensive EPA per pass. I believe Cal’s passing attack exploits that vulnerability on Friday night.

Why This Prediction Works

  • Virginia Tech allows 70% completion rate (bottom-10 nationally)
  • Cal’s defense ranks 23rd in EPA per pass
  • Hokies just 1-6 ATS this season
  • Under hits in 8 of Cal’s last 10 road games

Freshman phenom Jaron-Keawe Sagopolutele leads the a Golden Bears team looking for consistency after their win over North Carolina. JKS is up to 1696 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

However, he’s thrown six interceptions across his last four games and has cooled off considerably since his hot start to life in college football. That being said, the former four-star recruit has the innate ability to create explosive plays out of nowhere, and has a truly special arm.

Jaron should find plenty of room against a Virginia Tech secondary among the worst in the country in PFF coverage grade. This matchup sets up perfectly for my Cal vs Virginia Tech picks, as JKS should find throwing lanes all night.

The Golden Bears will lean on their top-tier defense against Virginia Tech. Cal is giving up just 345 yards, 6.8 yards per pass, and 133 rushing yards per game on the year – all of which are top-50 in the nation.

Additionally, Justin Wilcox’s defense ranks 29th in defensive success rate, and 23rd in EPA per play against the pass. The Golden Bears will be able to neutralize an anemic Hokies passing attack and keep the score close on Friday night.

Keep in mind, the under has hit in eight of the Golden Bears’ last 10 road games, and the Golden Bears are just 1-5 ATS in their last six against ACC opponents.

Interim head coach Phillip Montgomery leads the Hokies into Friday night college football action after Brent Pry was relieved of his duties following a 0-3 start.

Senior quarterback Kyron Drones has been hot and cold for the Hokies. On the one hand, Drones played well in back-to-back wins over Wofford and NC State, throwing for four touchdowns with no turnovers.

On the other hand, he’s thrown one interception in back-to-back losses, while completing just 56% of passes over the last two games. Additionally, the Hokies’ offensive line is among the worst in the nation, with a 45.2 PFF pass-blocking grade that ranks 126th.

Drones’ inconsistency factors heavily into this game prediction, especially behind that porous offensive line.

Drones will get little help from a Virginia Tech defense that ranks 134th in EPA against the pass, and 85th against the run. In fact, the Hokies’ defensive success rating of 43.9% sits 114th in the nation, and their EPA per play of -0.09 ranks 109th.

Any way you slice it, Virginia Tech is one of the worst football teams in the country. Which is why they’ve covered the spread in just one game so far this season.

These struggles validate my picks and prediction. The Hokies are just 1-5 ATS in their last six home games and have covered only once all season – a trend that continues Friday night.
