Two Mountain West schools trending in wildly different directions collide Friday night when the Fresno State Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) visit the Colorado State Rams (1-4, 0-1 Mountain West).
The Bulldogs are looking for their sixth straight win, while the Rams are trying to end a three-game slide, part of the reason they’re a home dog in the college football odds.
Kickoff is tonight at 9pm ET from Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, CO, with CBS Sports carrying the broadcast coverage.
Fresno State vs Colorado State Prediction
- Pick: Under 47.5 points (-110 at BetMGM)

It’s been nothing but W’s for the Bulldogs since suffering an opening game beatdown at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks. But that doesn’t mean I’m automatically playing them to cover the spread for my Fresno State vs Colorado State prediction.
They’ve reeled off five straight, but it’s been tight sledding the last couple of weeks as they’ve opened their Mountain West schedule.
It started with a 23-21 squeaker over Hawaii, followed up last week with a close 20-17 win over Nevada.
The one thing that holds up for the Bulldogs is defense. They’re currently second in the conference in points allowed at 19.5, allowing just two teams to hit the 20-point plateau during their current fun run.
Nothing has come easy for Colorado State this season.
They were crushed last game 45-24 by the San Diego State Aztecs to kick off their Mountain West conference schedule, and they’ve lost three straight.
The Rams are offensively challenged — their 24-point outing last game being their scoring high on the season. They currently rank 10th in Mountain West, averaging just 17 points per game, and have gone Under the total in three of the last four.
I don’t see the Rams finding enough points to pull off an upset, but in case Fresno State’s offense stays on this current low-scoring trend, it’s better to wager the total than get clipped on a spread if Colorado State somehow turns this into a rockfight. All three Rams’ home games this year have cashed the Under.
Bulldogs Betting Analysis and Trends
It might not have been pretty, but Fresno State has been able to land the plane in two very tightly contested games, in very different ways.
Against Hawaii, the defense came up huge, with K’Vion Thunderbird intercepting Micah Alejado and taking it 59 yards to the house, extending their one-point lead in the fourth quarter to eight with five minutes to play.
Hawaii did manage to score and cut it to two points, but the Bulldogs held the Rainbows to an incompletion on the 2-point conversion to hang on.
Against Nevada, the Bulldogs built up a 20-3 lead, but watched it chopped to just three points just two minutes into the fourth quarter.
The next Wolf Pack possession went three and out, and QB EJ Warner engineered a drive that killed the final 8:42 of game time, ensuring Nevada’s offense stayed sidelined the rest of the way.
Colorado State Betting Analysis & Predictions
During this losing slide, the Rams have trailed after the first quarter twice, and have been down at least a TD in all three by halftime.
Jackson Brousseau has been QB for all three losses, and he’s been underwhelming, held under 190 yards passing in each start, with just two TD passes. He’s also been sacked seven times over the last two games.
Colorado State does have a decent run game that averages 152.6 yards per game on the ground, and a pair of solid backs.
Jalen Dupree leads the team with 370 yards on the ground on a healthy 5.4 average. He’s coming off his best game of the year, running for 103 yards on 16 carries against SDSU.
Lloyd Avant provides a twitchy change of pace. He’s averaging a robust 6.8 yards per carry and has found paydirt twice.
They will be challenged Friday: Fresno State is second in the conference in run defense, allowing just 110 yards per game, and is tied with San Diego State for fewest rush TD’s allowed with two.
Fresno State vs Colorado State Betting Line
The Bulldogs are a solid 6.5-point road favorite, and a short -250 on the moneyline. The home team is getting +200 odds on the moneyline, and +100 odds to cover that spread. The total checks in at 47.5 points.
