Hawaii vs San Jose State Prediction
- Score Prediction: Hawaii 27, San Jose State 24
One of the better stories in the country, Hawaii is in the thick of the Mountain West race. While they have a conference loss, they control their destiny for making the Mountain West title game. Hawaii has its most wins since 2021, and a win would all but guarantee the team’s first winning record in a full season since 2019.
Freshman quarterback Micah Alejado has been dialed in lately. He has three touchdowns in each of his last three games, averaging 390 passing yards per game. Hawaii has put the offense on the left arm of Alejado, and he has delivered three straight wins in his starts.
Hawaii has a modest rushing attack led by Landon Sims. Sims is averaging 4.7 yards per carry, leading the Rainbow Warriors with 382 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He has also been a weapon out of the backfield as he is third on the team in catches and fourth on the team in receptions.
Hawaii has a dynamic pass-catching duo of Pofele Ashlock and Jackson Harris. Ashlock leads the team with 48 catches for 494 yards and six touchdowns, but Harris has averaged 16.1 yards per reception. With even a solid game against San Jose State, Harris could jump into the team lead for yards.
The Rainbow Warriors have a solid defense led by one of the Mountain West’s best pass rushers. Lineman Jackie Johnson has a conference-leading six sacks on the season. De’jon Benton has pitched in with four sacks.
San Jose State has had a less-than-ideal season. Sitting at a 2-5 record, the Spartans might have to win out to make a bowl game. They have a whopping four losses by one score, including out-of-conference losses to Central Michigan and Stanford. San Jose State lost its last two games, dropping road games to Wyoming and Utah State before its bye.
Despite the team’s overall spotty performance, Walker Eget has been a bright spot. He leads the conference in completions, attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passing yards per game. The senior gunslinger has 300 yards in four different games, and he maxed out with a ridiculous 473 yards against Stanford. He has multiple passing touchdowns in five of seven games.
Steve Chavez-Soto has been the Spartans’ best runner, averaging 66 yards per game over the last three games. He has found the end zone three times, including twice against New Mexico in San Jose State’s lone conference win.
The man of the hour for San Jose State is Danny Scudero. He leads the conference with 56 catches and eight touchdowns. His 870 receiving yards lead the FBS. He has five games with 130 or more yards, including a pair of 180-yard games. He also has a four-touchdown game.
Linebacker Jordan Pollard is the straw that stirs the drink in San Jose. He leads the team with 56 total tackles. He has pitched in with 1.5 sacks, a pass deflection, and a fumble recovery as well. Cornerback Jaylen Thomas leads the team with 32 solo tackles and six pass deflections.
Hawaii vs San Jose State Pick
- Hawaii Moneyline (+106, FanDuel)

Here is my primary justification for taking Hawaii Moneyline:
- In a game with two premier passing offenses, I will take the plus-money underdog. I view this game as a toss-up, so the +106 odds are a hammer for me. Usually, the +2.5 would be worthwhile, but this could be an overtime game where games often end in three-point and seven-point deficits.
- With two dynamic passing offenses, both coverage units will be tested. Hawaii has one of the better units in the country (89.9 PFF coverage grade) while San Jose State has a weaker unit (53.1 PFF coverage grade). I expect Alejado to have a slightly better performance than Eget.
- Hawaii’s Kansei Matsuzawa is the best kicker in the country. He is 20-for-20 on field goals and 23-for-23 on extra points. He has made multiple field goals in seven different games, including making three field goals in five games. He is also the owner of college football’s best nickname, the “Tokyo Toe.” In a close game, having an electric kicker like Matsuzawa is often the difference between winning and losing.
Hawaii vs San Jose State Betting Lines
The books have San Jose State as slight home favorites for this Saturday night college football matchup, with the total set between 55.5 and 56.5 points. Over bettors can bet over 55.5 for -115 odds at FanDuel. Under bettors can bet under 56.5 for -110 odds on BetMGM.
San Jose State bettors should take the Spartans at -1.5 on BetMGM (-110 odds) or -118 on the moneyline, also at BetMGM. Hawaii bettors should take the Rainbow Warriors at +2.5 on DraftKings (-122 odds) or +106 on the moneyline at FanDuel.
Hawaii vs San Jose State, Last Five Matchups
San Jose State has won the last four matchups, taking the lead in the all-time series 23-22-1. However, San Jose State has won back-to-back home games over Hawaii since 1976-1977, a feat they will look to do with a win Saturday night.
In their last matchup, San Jose State won in a shutout. Future Mountain West triple crown winner Nick Nash had a pair of touchdowns, and running back Kairee Robinson also scored twice. San Jose State held Hawaii under 200 yards and forced three turnovers.
