Iowa vs Nebraska Prediction

  • Prediction: Iowa wins and covers

Iowa’s strong play in the trenches will allow them to dictate proceedings on Black Friday. The Hawkeyes allow just 4.4 yards per play and 15.9 points per game, both of which are ninth in the nation. Kirk Ferentz specializes in running duo 38 times a game and forcing your front to stop it.

Iowa’s 134.8 passing yards per game will impress nobody heading into this matchup. The Hawkeyes remain predictable, rushing the football on nearly 60% of snaps and churning out an average ground game that’s 58th in yards per contest. However, this run-heavy approach creates the perfect mismatch against Nebraska’s vulnerable run defense.

That’s a nightmare for a Nebraska defense that’s 124th in EPA against the rush and 125th in rushing defense success rate. Teams have repeatedly battered the Cornhuskers’ front, including last week when 5-6 Penn State ran for 231 yards in a 37-10 loss.

The Iowa vs Nebraska betting trends are in the Hawkeyes’ favor. In fact, Iowa have won six straight away at Nebraska, the longest winning streak for a road team in Lincoln since the 1960s. Ferentz’s men are also 11-1 ATS as a road favorite versus Big Ten opponents who score more than 25 points per game when the total is less than 48.5 since 2008.

The recent history in this rivalry tells the story. Iowa have taken the last two meetings by identical 13-10 scores, both decided on last-second field goals from Drew Stevens and Marshall Meeder.

With Nebraska’s offense struggling mightily over their last five games, averaging just 17.8 points per contest compared to 41.0 in their first six games, the Cornhuskers face an uphill battle against one of the nation’s elite defenses.

Iowa vs Nebraska Best Bets

Best Bet: Under 39.5 (-110)

Friday’s contest marks the 56th all-time meeting between these squads, with Nebraska holding a 30-22-3 advantage in the series. Don’t expect fireworks when Iowa vs Nebraska kicks off. Neither of these top-tier defenses allow anything easy to opponents, with Iowa sitting ninth in net EPA per play allowed and Nebraska 23rd.

With an offense sitting 126th in EPA per pass, Iowa can’t move the football through the air. On the flip side, the Nebraska defense is 124th in EPA against the run, giving the Hawkeyes the ultimate mismatch to exploit. Kirk Ferentz’s squad thrives in methodical, run-heavy games that chew clock and limit possessions.

Expect an old-school trench battle, with both teams aiming to establish the run early and often. With snow in the forecast and the Cornhuskers’ backup quarterback in the game, this Iowa vs Nebraska matchup screams under. The last three games between these teams have averaged just 29 total points, with the under hitting in two of three.

Iowa’s defense has been particularly dominant in the second half this season, ranking sixth nationally in both total defense (129.4 yards allowed) and scoring defense (6.3 points allowed) after halftime. This stifling defensive performance in crucial moments should keep this Iowa vs Nebraska spread under the total, making the under one of the strongest plays on the college football slate this Black Friday.
