No. 4 LSU (4-0, 2-2 ATS) travels to Oxford to take on No. 13 Ole Miss (3-0; 3-1 ATS) Saturday in the “Magnolia Bowl.” The Tigers have won seven of the last nine meetings, and the winning team has covered the spread in each of the last five meetings.

The Rebels are 30-3 in their last 33 home games. The Rebels are 1.5-point favorites across the board, and the total is firm at 57.5.

LSU vs Ole Miss Prediction

LSU has a different identity than the last two years where their defense was – in a word – horrible. Boosted by some transfers, LSU now ranks No. 9 in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 9.2 points a game.

The strength of the LSU defense is a secondary led by Va. Tech transfer cornerback Mansoor Delane and do-everything linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. Both are almost certain first-round picks.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has used two quarterbacks this season. Austin Simmons was the starter when the season began, but it looks like he’s been replaced. Trinidad Chambliss has started the last two weeks and is expected to start again against LSU. He’s a better runner than Simmons and has thrown for 718 yards and four touchdowns.

The Rebels are scoring 44.8 points per game, so it’s the classic offense vs. defense match-up. Something has to give.

I’m picking LSU to go on the road and edge the Rebels. The LSU defense is the best unit on the field.

Kiffin went viral on social media this week when his daughter was pictured with LSU linebacker Whit Weeks saying ‘take the over’ but I don’t see this one going over 50 points.

LSU’s offense was supposed to be loaded with Heisman candidate Garrett Nussmeier at the helm, but he’s been steady, not great (the whispers around the program are that he’s playing hurt). LSU will also be without lead running back Caden Durham, who has a sprained ankle.

The last two games between these two came down to a final play. I like LSU kicker Damian Ramos to win it with a late kick.

There hasn’t been much movement in this line. The big intrigue is how LSU is ranked higher than Ole Miss in the AP poll, but the underdog coming in. That’s a red flag for smart bettors.

LSU is 4-6 against the spread in its last 10 games. They didn’t cover huge spreads – 49 points in a win over Southeastern Louisiana and 35 in a win over Louisiana Tech – this season.

Ole Miss is 4-1 in its last five games against the spread.

As far as the total, LSU has hit the under in nine of its last 12 games, while Ole Miss has gone over in eight of its last 13 contests. Three of the previous four meetings ticked the under.
