  • NIU battles UMass in Wednesday Night MACtion
  • The under has hit in four of Northern Illinois’ last six road games
  • Dive into my NIU vs UMass prediction, with MACtion picks and the line

Wednesday night MACtion continues with NIU vs UMass in Week 12 of the college football season. The Huskies are fresh off a blowout loss to Toledo, 42-3, last week, while the Minutemen will be licking their wounds after a 44-10 loss to Akron.

Neither of these teams has any momentum to speak of, which will likely make Wednesday’s showcase a chaotic encounter. All of the action gets underway from McGuirk Alumni Stadium at 7pm ET.

Lock in my NIU vs UMass prediction and picks for Wednesday night MACtion below.

NIU vs UMass Prediction

These offenses rank dead last and next to last in EPA per pass, so don’t expect a shootout. The Huskies are scoring only 12 points per game, while the Minutemen counter with just nine.

Expect a sloppy football game, full of mistakes and outstanding MACtion on Wednesday night. With a huge 11.5-point spread, I’m rolling with the under.

These teams have combined to score more than 20 points just four times all year, and we’re in Week 12. Don’t expect either offense to suddenly turn into “the Greatest Show on Turf.” Even with an exploitable UMass defense, I’m betting this NIU vs UMass matchup struggles to cross 40 total points.

Northern Illinois’ offense is one of the worst in the nation. The Huskies rely on their rushing offense to carry them to points, rushing for nearly 160 yards per game on 4.3 yards per carry.

Sophomore running back Telly Johnson leads the way with 601 yards and three touchdowns, while senior Chavon Wright also has over 500 yards on the ground. That bodes well against a UMass defense allowing over 200 rushing yards per contest, and 4.7 yards per carry.

Thomas Hammock’s offense has relied on two quarterbacks this season, with Josh Holst throwing for 689 yards and four touchdowns, and Brady Davidson chipping in with 269 yards and a touchdown of his own. Both played against Toledo last week, with Holst leading the way with 87 passing yards.

With the offense averaging just 4.6 yards per pass and a total 107 passing yards per contest, the Huskies are ill-equipped to move the football through the air.

On defense, the Huskies allow just 24 points per game, with the under hitting in six of Northern Illinois’ last nine contests. NIU is 1-5 SU in their last six games, with only a win against Ball State to speak of over the last six weeks.

The UMass defense may be the worst in the country. This stop-unit leaks yards and points like a sieve, allowing nearly 450 yards and 38 points per game.

The Minutemen have shown no signs of improvement of late, giving up 467 yards of offense and six touchdowns against Akron last week. For the season, they’re allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete over 71% of passes and a monumental 8.7 yards per attempt.

Things don’t get any better on the offensive side, as UMass sits in the bottom-two in the nation in points, yards, and third-down conversions. The Minutemen complete just 50% of passes, with quarterback AJ Hairston posting 866 passing yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions on the year.

Hairston’s been sacked 17 times and unable to create much of anything for UMass’s inept offense.

Having said that, the total has gone over in 10 of Massachusetts’ last 13 games, with their awful defense bearing most of the blame.
