The Ducks face a major crisis at running back heading into the biggest game in program history. Starter Noah Whittington is questionable with an undisclosed injury. Backup Jordon Davison is out with a broken clavicle suffered in the Orange Bowl win over Texas Tech.

Noah Whittington Injury Update

Starting running back Noah Whittington is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury. The sixth-year senior is Oregon’s leading rusher with 129 carries for 829 yards and six touchdowns this season.

If Whittington can’t play, Oregon will be down to just two scholarship running backs. True freshman Dierre Hill Jr. and Jay Harris would handle the entire workload against Indiana’s defense.

Jordon Davison Out With Broken Clavicle

True freshman Jordon Davison broke his clavicle in the first quarter of Oregon’s Orange Bowl victory but played through the injury for the entire game. The injury was announced after the win.

Davison rushed for 667 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. His 15 scores are more than double any other Oregon player. He was Oregon’s highest-graded rusher on Pro Football Focus and had the most success against Indiana in their first meeting.

Running Back Depth Crisis

Oregon is down to three available scholarship running backs. True freshman Dierre Hill Jr. rushed for 570 yards and five touchdowns this season. Jay Harris entered the transfer portal Wednesday but will be available after traveling to Atlanta.

The crisis forced Oregon to move two defensive players to running back this week. Safety Kilohana Haasenritter and linebacker Brayden Platt both switched to offense to provide emergency depth.

Both have running back experience from high school. Platt rushed for 928 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior at Yelm High School in Washington. Haasenritter played running back during the 2022 season at Oregon before moving to safety.

Multiple backs are out due to transfer portal departures. Jayden Limar, Makhi Hughes, and Da’Jaun Riggs are all listed as out. Hughes committed to Houston during the playoff run.

“We’ve talked about it all year, strength in numbers,” Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said. “Sometimes peoples’ roles change throughout the year. That’s where you have to be selfless.”

The Hoosiers enter relatively healthy with no new injury concerns. Indiana’s injury report remains unchanged from the Rose Bowl where they dominated Alabama 38-3.

Stephen Daley, Brendan Franke Out

Star defensive end Stephen Daley remains out with the season-ending leg injury he suffered celebrating Indiana’s Big Ten Championship. Daley was a cornerstone of the Hoosiers’ defense before the injury.

Kicker Brendan Franke is doubtful with a lower-body injury. Sophomore Nico Radicic will handle kicking duties. Radicic is 15-of-16 on field goals in 13 games this season.

Defensive Depth Tested

Indiana will be without defensive linemen Kellan Wyatt and Andrew DePaepe. DePaepe entered the transfer portal. Defensive backs Amariyun Knighten and Bryson Bonds are also out.

Despite the absences, Indiana’s defense dominated in the Rose Bowl. The Hoosiers held Alabama to just three points.

This marks a rematch of Indiana’s 30-20 regular season win over Oregon. The winner advances to face Miami in the national championship on January 19. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET Friday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
