SPORTSBOOK
Friday, December 19: Alabama at Oklahoma
Time: 8:00 PM ET | TV: ABC/ESPN
Line: Oklahoma -1.5 | Total: 40.5
The CFP bracket opens with a rematch. Oklahoma beat Alabama 23-21 back in November, but the Sooners needed a pick-six and some serious luck to pull it off. Alabama dominated the yardage battle 406-212 but couldn’t finish drives.
QB Ty Simpson struggled late in the season, posting just 3.7 yards per dropback in his last two games. But he’s had two weeks to rest and reset. The bigger concern for Bama is the loss of LB LT Overton, who’s out with an undisclosed illness.
Oklahoma gets edge rusher R Mason Thomas back after missing three games with injury. He and Taylor Wein have combined for 22.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks this season. They’ll test Alabama’s struggling offensive line all night.
The total of 40.5 tells you everything about this game. Both defenses are elite, and neither offense has been lighting up scoreboards lately. Oklahoma ranks 95th in yards per play but makes up for it with timely big plays to WR Isaiah Sategna III.
Saturday, December 20: Miami at Texas A&M
Time: 12:00 PM ET | TV: ABC/ESPN
Line: Texas A&M -3.5 | Total: 48.5
This is the most intriguing game on the College Football Playoff bracket. Both teams are volatile, capable of blowing out opponents or falling apart completely. QB Carson Beck transferred from Georgia to Miami and has thrown for 3,072 yards and 25 touchdowns, but he’s also tossed 10 interceptions.
Texas A&M’s defense is built to create chaos. They lead the nation in sack rate at 9.7% and force opponents into third-and-long situations constantly. LB Daymion Sanford and DT Tyler Onyedim have combined for 27 run stuffs this season.
The Aggies might get RB Le’Veon Moss back after he missed the last six games. If he plays, that’s a massive boost to their ground game. Safety Bryce Anderson is also expected to return for A&M.
Miami’s defense is just as dangerous. DE Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor have forced the highest blown block rate in the country. Nickel Keionte Scott is probable but could be limited. The 12th Man at Kyle Field will be out in full force for this noon kickoff.
Saturday, December 20: Tulane at Ole Miss
Time: 3:30 PM ET | TV: TNT/Max
Line: Ole Miss -17.5 | Total: 64.5
Lane Kiffin is gone to LSU, but the Rebels still have all the talent. Pete Golding takes over as head coach, and his first task is getting past a Tulane team that went 5-0 in one-score games this season.
Ole Miss crushed Tulane 45-10 back in Week 4, but the Green Wave played terribly that day. QB Jake Retzlaff faced constant pressure and went just 5-for-17. Since then, Tulane figured things out and won five straight games to close the season.
The big question is whether QB Trinidad Chambliss and RB Kewan Lacy stick around or follow Kiffin to Baton Rouge. Both have confirmed they’re playing in this game, but their futures beyond Saturday remain unclear. Chambliss finished 8th in Heisman voting after torching defenses all season.
Lacy rushed for 1,279 yards and 20 touchdowns this year. If Ole Miss can establish the run, they’ll control this game. The 17.5-point spread is massive, but the talent gap is real.
Saturday, December 20: James Madison at Oregon
Time: 7:30 PM ET | TV: TNT/Max
Line: Oregon -20.5 | Total: 47.5
Oregon earned the No. 5 seed after finishing 11-1 and gets to host James Madison at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks rank 4th in SP+ and 5th in defensive efficiency, and they’re massive favorites at home.
James Madison earned its spot as the Sun Belt Champion and finished 12-1. The Dukes rank first nationally in success rate allowed on defense. They held Louisville to just 264 yards and averaged 46 points per game over their final seven contests.
RB Wayne Knight is a home run hitter with 15 carries of 20-plus yards this season. Seven of those went for 40-plus yards. If James Madison pulls the upset, it’ll come from big plays and forcing turnovers.
Oregon QB Dante Moore averaged just 4.2 yards per dropback against Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa late in the season. The Ducks need him to be sharper against a JMU defense that ranks 13th in sack rate. Bob Chesney will coach the Dukes through the playoffs before leaving for the UCLA job.
Complete CFP First-Round Schedule
National Championship Odds & Spread
Ohio State remains the favorite to win it all at +225, followed by Indiana at +280. Georgia sits at +500 despite earning the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye. Oregon checks in at +800, while Texas A&M is a dark horse at +1700.
The Aggies are getting healthy at the right time with Moss and Anderson potentially returning. If they can knock off Miami at home, they’ll have serious momentum heading into the quarterfinals.
Alabama at +2200 might be worth a look if you believe Ty Simpson can rediscover his early-season form. The Tide beat four ranked teams in a row before fading late. Two weeks of rest could make all the difference.
