Indiana made history by earning the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking after beating Ohio State 13-10 in the Big Ten Championship. The Hoosiers completed their first undefeated season since 1945, and QB Fernando Mendoza is now the heavy Heisman favorite heading into the CFP bracket.

Georgia, Texas Tech, and SMU round out the top four seeds in the College Football Playoff bracket and earn first-round byes straight to the quarterfinals. The Bulldogs avenged their regular-season loss to Alabama by dominating the SEC Championship, while Texas Tech claimed their first Big 12 title since 1954.

The first round features on-campus games at the higher seeds, with Alabama traveling to Oklahoma in what should be an absolute slugfest between two SEC programs.

Alabama at Oklahoma

Friday night brings the SEC showdown everyone wants to see. Alabama became the first three-loss team to make the College Football Playoff, and now they travel to Norman to face Oklahoma in their first year in the conference.

The Sooners are hosting a playoff game despite losing to the Tide during the regular season. Their defense has been carrying them all year, racking up blocked field goals and pick-sixes to keep games close.

Miami at Texas A&M

The Hurricanes squeaked into the bracket ahead of Notre Dame, but now they face a brutal trip to Kyle Field. The 12th Man will be out in force for this noon kickoff.

Miami sat idle on championship weekend while the committee debated their fate. Texas A&M finished 11-1 and has one of the toughest home-field advantages in college football.

Tulane at Ole Miss

This is a rematch from earlier in the season when Ole Miss crushed Tulane by five touchdowns. The Green Wave earned their spot by winning the AAC Championship, but they face an uphill battle in Oxford.

Lane Kiffin’s squad missed the SEC Championship Game but looked dominant down the stretch. Pete Golding took over as permanent head coach and has the Rebels playing their best football.

James Madison at Oregon

The Sun Belt Champion Dukes get a brutal draw at Autzen Stadium. James Madison finished 12-1 and earned their spot as one of the five highest-ranked conference champions.

Oregon sits at No. 5 overall and brings a potent offense led by QB Dante Moore. Bob Chesney will coach James Madison through the playoffs before leaving for the UCLA job.

The Notre Dame Snub

Notre Dame finished 10-2 and was ranked No. 11 in the final college football odds, but they got left out of the CFP bracket entirely. The Irish sat ahead of Miami in the rankings for most of the season, but the committee flipped them on Selection Sunday.

Miami’s head-to-head win over Notre Dame back in Week 1 became the deciding factor. The Hurricanes jumped to No. 10, and the Irish became the first team out.

The debate has been fierce all week, with analysts questioning why head-to-head suddenly mattered when both teams sat out championship weekend. Notre Dame fans have every right to be furious.

Quarterfinals and Beyond

Winners from the first round advance to the New Year’s Six bowl games for the quarterfinals. Here’s the full playoff schedule:

  • Quarterfinals: Dec. 31 (Cotton Bowl) & Jan. 1 (Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl)
  • Semifinals: Jan. 8 (Fiesta Bowl) & Jan. 9 (Peach Bowl)
  • National Championship: Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens

Indiana’s dream season continues, but they’ll need to survive two more games to reach Miami. Ohio State, despite the Big Ten Championship loss, still has a clear path as the No. 2 seed with a first-round bye.
