Revenge has to be on the mind of the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (1-1, 1-1-0 ATS) when they host the Sam Houston Bearkats (0-2, 0-2-0 ATS) Saturday night.

The FBS school dumped Hawaii 31-13 last season, but the college football odds are favoring the Mountain West’s Warriors, even after getting clubbed by Arizona last game.

It’s a late start Saturday night, with kickoff set for 11:59pm ET from Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, with Spectrum Sports carrying the broadcast.

See below for the latest odds, preview and my betting prediction for this one.

Hawaii is a 7-point favorite, a number that has shaved down from as high as 9.5 points, due to a significant injury (more on that below), but that’s the reason Warriors are getting +100 odds to cover that spread, while still a short -260 on the moneyline.

The Bearkats, who have yet to win on the year, are a distant +210 on the moneyline. The total sits at 49 points.

Alejado’s Ankle a Concern for Hawaii

Hawaii QB Micah Alejado injured his ankle in their Week 0 win over Stanford. While adrenaline carried him through that one, he surprisingly was good to go in Week 1 against Arizona.

However, down 31-6 and with the game out of reach, Alejado reaggravated his ankle injury, and is now listed as a game-time decision against the Bearkats.

If he can’t go, freshman Dermaricus Davis and senior Caleb Freeman would likely both see action, but Hawaii would be in big trouble without its star pivot.

Alejado struggled in the 40-6 loss to Arizona, but that was expected, as the Wildcats would be one of their toughest opponents all year.

The Warriors’ run game was also essentially shut down, producing just 67 yards on 29 carries. They’ll need to bring that back from the dead against Sam Houston, especially if Alejado is out.

Bearkats Getting Lit Up Defensively

Maybe it’s not a surprise Sam Houston is 0-2, and surrendering 39.5 points per game in the two losses. But it’s maybe more of a surprise their offense hasn’t been able to go toe-to-toe with Western Kentucky or UNLV.

QB Hunter Watson hasn’t thrown a TD pass yet this year — this is the same guy who torched Hawaii with three TD passes a year ago. Qua’Vez Humphreys caught two of those majors for 106 yards, but it’s a stale start to his campaign, with just one grab for nine yards in two games.

That’s just not going to cut it, especially when the defense has surrendered well over 900 yards of total offense through those two games.

Sam Houston vs Hawaii Prediction

Sam Houston’s offense might be happy to see Hawaii, and I’m sure the Rainbow Warriors would welcome a turnstile defense after scoring just six points, but this one has slugfest written all over it.

Even if Alejado can go, he’s clearly compromised and will need to lean heavily on the run game to keep the Bearkats’ defense honest.

Sam Houston hasn’t been able to sustain drives: through two games, they’ve converted just 3-for-26 on third down.

Two teams not firing at full force will continue to sputter on the Island.
