The Tulane Green Wave (6-2, 3-1 in the American) and No.22 Memphis Tigers (8-1, 4-1 in the American) battle under the lights on Friday night. Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium plays host to a 9 PM ET kickoff on Nov. 7. ESPN will broadcast the game.

• Memphis 34, Tulane 26

With only one conference loss, Tulane has an outside shot at making it to the American title game. While slight, if the Green Wave were to win out, they could be the final conference champion included in the CFP. Their loss to Ole Miss is excusable, but their shocking loss to UTSA last week by 22 could be the death blow.

BYU transfer Jake Retzlaff has played admirably for the Green Wave after being dismissed in the offseason. He has 16 total touchdowns, serving as one of the better dual-threat quarterbacks in college football. Even including sack yardage, he is Tulane’s leading rusher.

Jake Retzlaff ran for 111 yards and *four* touchdowns against Duke tonight, throwing for 245 yards as well in a 34-27 Tulane victory.

Among proper running backs, Javin Gordon is the closest to being a lead back, averaging a shade under 10 carries per game. He has a mediocre 4.3 yards per carry and three rushing touchdowns on the season.

Tulane has four receivers with over 220 yards this season. The leader of the group is Omari Hayes. Hayes leads the squad with 25 catches and 376 yards. Of the 10 receiving touchdowns Tulane has scored, nine different players have caught them.

On defense, watch for the defensive back trio of Jaheim Johnson, E’zaiah Shine, and Javion White. Johnson and Shine have six pass deflections each, while White leads the team with three interceptions.

Memphis is probably the cream of the crop at the Group of Six level this season. They stole an SEC win over Arkansas, and they toppled No.18 USF the week before Halloween. They had a hiccup at UAB, but they have won their last two games to move back into the polls and CFP picture.

Nevada transfer Brendon Lewis has been a savior. He leads the American with a 69.1% completion rate, accounting for 18 total touchdowns and only four interceptions. He leads the Tigers in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Despite Lewis being the leading rusher, Memphis has a pair of exquisite backs who are on Lewis’ heels for the rushing lead. Gregory Desrosiers has averaged 6.0 yards per carry, and he has seven rushing touchdowns. Sutton Smith is a tick behind in both categories, averaging 5.9 yards per rush with six touchdowns. Another Tiger, Frank Peasant, has six rushing touchdowns on the season.

Unlike Tulane who has spread around their receiving touchdowns, Memphis is dominated by Cortez Braham. Braham leads the conference with seven receiving touchdowns, and he leads Memphis in catches (39) and receiving yards (632). Braham has a solid shot at 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns if the Tigers make the American title game.

The name to watch on the Memphis defense is linebacker Sam Brumfield. He leads the conference with 12.0 tackles for a loss. He also has 4.5 sacks and a sack on the season.

Here is my reasoning for backing this +236 Tulane vs Memphis parlay:

• Memphis is a resounding 8-1 against the spread this season. Tulane is a comparably rough 3-4-1 against the spread, including a 1-2-1 ATS record in conference play. Tulane is 0-1 ATS as underdogs.
• Regarding the over, Memphis has the No.12 scoring offense in FBS. Memphis has a whopping 30 rushing touchdowns, averaging 3.3 per game with an incendiary rushing attack. Tulane has been a willing participant in scoring as well, pumping in 23 points in every game besides their 35-point loss to Ole Miss.
• Memphis does have a top-25 defense by points allowed, but they did some out-of-conference padding, allowing 11.0 points per game in the first three weeks. Since then, they have allowed a much more mediocre 23.3 points per game.

Memphis holds the edge in this American Conference battle, posting a 25-15-1 record. The rivalry has been fairly even outside of an 11-game win streak Memphis had from 2002 to 2017.
