They aren’t calling it this, but it’s a real “Beamer Bowl” when South Carolina takes on Virginia Tech in the Aflac Kickoff Game on Sunday in Atlanta. South Carolina is coached by Shane Beamer, the son of legendary Hokies coach Frank Beamer.

The Gamecocks have won each of their last 10 games as a favorite against unranked teams, but Virginia Tech is 9-6 against the spread in its last 15 games as a touchdown (or more) underdog.

Below, I’ll set out my prediction and favorite parlay for this afternoon’s game, but first, the updated Virginia Tech vs South Carolina odds.

This line opened as high as 10 points back in June, but has dropped as money has come in on Virginia Tech. The Hokies were getting 7.5 points at FanDuel as of gameday morning with the total set at 51.5. The total was originally 45.5 O/U, so tells you where the money is going in the Week 1 NCAAF public betting splits.

Last season, Virginia Tech was 6-7 against the spread and 8-5 over/under. The Gamecocks went 9-4 against the spread and 7-6 over/under.

Each of Virginia Tech’s last five games against South Carolina teams hit the under, counting Clemson. The Hokies have failed to cover the spread the last five games against SC teams, but again, Clemson.

Virginia Tech vs South Carolina Prediction

• South Carolina -7.5 (-106 at FanDuel)

I believe the line has dropped too far and South Carolina is a good play in this spot. The Gamecocks were arguably the best team left out of the CFP last year and bring back LaNorris Sellers at quarterback, the sixth-favorite in the Heisman odds. Sellers draws Cam Newton comparisons: big, strong, and athletic.

Things have been rough at Va. Tech for Brent Pry. He’s won just 16 games in three seasons and his seat is hot. He brought in a new defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator – never a good sign. The Hokies have a good quarterback in Kyron Drones, but he was banged up a lot last year and they finished 6-7. Virginia Tech lost five games by 10 points or fewer, but the confidence in this program and coaching staff has waned.

Virginia Tech vs South Carolina Parlay Pick

• Sellers 2+ TDs (+275), over 70 rushing yards (+164) and game over 51.5 (-108)

One thing we haven’t yet seen this college football weekend is someone stake an early claim to the Heisman Trophy. Sellers could be that guy. It definitely wasn’t Arch Manning.

After a rough start to last season, he became a dominant player in college football throwing for 18 touchdowns and running for seven more. South Carolina also brought in Utah State transfer Rahsul Faison at running back to keep teams from keying on Sellers. He had over 1,100 yards last season with the Aggies.

Sellers is a great bet to score two touchdowns or more, because he will get the ball in goal line situations and is also capable of breaking big runs. The only reason I’m hesitant on the over is that Shane Beamer may not want to embarrass his old school, but SC is a much better team right now.
