  • Top Gun: Maverick is the -170 odds-on favorite to be the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2022
  • The film has already banked more than $1.4 billion
  • Avatar 2 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are the other top betting choices

When it comes to the highest-grossing movies of 2022, thus far, Top Gun: Maverick is topping them all.

The Tom Cruise sequel to the 1986 hit Top Gun is the current runaway leader in movie money this year. Latest numbers are showing Top Gun: Maverick with gross US earnings of $662 million.

Oddsmakers aren’t foreseeing any change in this landscape on the film horizon. Top Gun: Maverick is being pegged as the -170 odds-on favorite to still be the highest-grossing movie of 2022 when the year comes to an end.

Two yet-to-be-released flicks – Avatar 2 (+150) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (+180) – are the next two choices in this betting market.

Top Gun: Maverick Is Top Notch

The long-awaited sequel to the original Top Gun, with Cruise starring as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, launched with velocity and quickly soared to heights similar to those reached by the fighter jets flown by the movie’s main characters. Opening May 27, it banked over $52 million the first day.

Internationally, Top Gun: Maverick has made another $720 million, bringing the worldwide total above $1.405 billion. It’s among the highest-grossing US films of all-time.

The Cruise vehicle surpassed such legendary blockbusters as The Avengers and Titanic to gain the #6 overall spot on the US movie money list. Titanic earned $659 million

It enjoyed the best first weekend of any Cruise film, banking $124 million. Currently, it sits at #12 on the all-time global movie money earning list.

Can Avatar 2 Do It Again?

At the top of the all-time earning list for films is the original Avatar. That movie banked $2,847,397,339 worldwide.

Just as audiences were waiting nearly three decades to soar again with Top Gun, fans of Avatar have patiently sat for 13 years in order to get a chance to see the second film.

However, Avatar 2: The Way of the Water isn’t scheduled to open in theaters until December 16. That simply isn’t going to give it enough time to catch Top Gun: Maverick.

Director James Cameron is blaming technology issues in filming the underwater scenes for the production delays.

Second Black Panther Film Also On The Way

Another second coming to the silver screen is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The original Black Panther was released in 2018. However, the tragic death of the film’s star Chadwick Boseman, who succumbed to cancer in 2020, left the chances of a sequel up in the air.

Like Avatar 2, this film has also endured production delays. It was originally slated for a July release. Instead, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now scheduled to open in theaters on November 11.

The original Black Panther garnered $1.3 billion in worldwide earnings. However, much like Avatar 2, the clock figures to run out on the film’s earning potential for 2022 before there’s any chance to catch Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick In Cruise Control

At this juncture, it would take an absolutely colossal performance from another film in order to unseat Top Gun: Maverick from the top spot in the 2022 movie earnings race.

Currently, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is holding down the second spot, but it’s a distant second. That film has banked $411,331,607.

Pick: Top Gun: Maverick (-170).
