Korea’s Global Starcraft League Season 3 returns on August 29, 2019 for the round of 16, where Dark looks to win back-to-back GSL titles.

Maru will definitely be in the equation as he’s the only player in Starcraft history to win four consecutive seasons of the GSL.

Maru Eyeing Five GSL Trophies

2018 was the year of Maru. Prior to Maru’s ascension, Nestea was the only player to win back-to-back GSL titles. Maru absolutely shattered that by winning four in a row and has established himself as the ‘Marine Prince’.

His GSL streak came to an end in Season 2. He got eliminated in the round of 32 following losses to Patience and INnoVation. Just prior to that, Stats got the better of Maru at the AfreecaTV GSL Super Tournament 1 in the round of 16.

Regardless of all of those disappointing results, Maru got a bit of redemption at the 2019 World Cyber Games. In the grand finals he 2-0’d Reynor, who is considered to be one of the best Zerg players in the world.

For the round of 16,  there’s a question of which Maru is going to show up. The round of 32 wasn’t at all convincing for the top Terran player. He suffered four total losses including his 2-1 match loss to TY. When he won the 2019 GSL Season 1 title, he clean swept his group in the round of 32.

Maru is certainly the favorite based on his historic run starting in 2018. However, recent results suggest that the trend of Maru dominating the GSL is over.

Dark Returns as Champion

The man with the second best odds to win are none other than the defending champion. In GSL Season 2: Code S, Dark had no issues running through the bracket. He didn’t drop a single match until his semifinals showdown against Hurricane which he ended up winning 4-1.

Dark is one of only four Zerg players remaining in the round of 16. He’s also still on top of the World Championship Series 2019 Global Standings thanks to two third place finishes earlier in the year.

A Potential Longshot

People might be sleeping on Trap after he barely survived the round of 32. He got swept by Solar before he won a do-or-die game three against Patience. Despite the group stage struggles, Trap made the finals back in Season 2 and fourth in Season 1. He’s proven that he can make the finals, and at +1500 Trap might be worth a shot in the dark for a big payout.

Pick: Dark (+600)

Winner’s Race Betting Odds at GSL Season 3: Code S

Winners Race Odds
Terran -105
Protoss +135
Zerg +550

The sole reason for Terran being the betting favorite is the fact that Maru plays it. TY has the second highest odds to win among all Terran players so betting Terran only makes sense if you’re all in on Maru winning.

There are only four Zerg players in the round of 16 but that list includes the returning champion Dark, and Solar who defeated Trap in the the round of 32. Although the percentages don’t favor a Zerg victory, the caliber of players piloting them could make it a big payout bet.

Pick: Zerg (+550)
