  • Rift Rivals 2019 is set to take place June 24-30
  • Will EU be able to go back-to-back?
  • Is North America actually a better bet?

The NA-EU version of Rift Rivals is set to kick off June 24th and go all the way to June 30th, and will see the top three teams from the Spring Split from both regions face off against each other to claim the bragging rights of the better region at the halfway point of the year. Last year saw Europe take the title with a final score of 3-1 over the North American teams, but is it realistic to expect them to go back-to-back over their rival region?

Currently heading into this year’s Rift Rivals, EU once again sits as the favorite to come out on top. Though at such a low return, and given the form of the teams from North America, Europe may not be the best bet at Rift Rivals 2019.

Will Europe Be Able to Take the Title on Home Soil?

For the past three years the host region of Rift Rivals has not been able to close it out on their home turf, with North America claiming the title in Germany in 2017, and Europe taking it home last year in Los Angeles. Heading into this year’s regional showdown between the two regions, EU sits as the favorite to take the title on their home continent.

They do probably have the strongest team of any region in G2, but I’m not fully sold that Fnatic and Origen are going to be able to carry their weight against the North Americans this time around. Both of the teams have proven that they are able to hold their own against the competition in the LEC which historically is a better region overall than NA, but the top three teams in North America are a few steps ahead of the other teams in the LCS.

Liquid has probably the best bot lane of any team that will be at Rift Rivals, and both TSM and Cloud9 should be able to beat Origen and Fnatic probably eight times out of 10. This year the top three teams in the LCS are just very good. They’re so close together in terms of skill and they are able to offer more unique looks than the EU teams aside from G2.

I just don’t see the other EU teams other than G2 being able to beat the North American squads that will be in attendance at Rift Rivals this year. I would say it’s probably fair to expect G2 to go flawless throughout the tournament, but I don’t think they will be able to carry their region to back-to-back titles at Rift Rivals. Expect North America to steal the crown away from the Europeans on their turf when all is said and done.

Pick: NA (+220)
