The final major championship of the season is upon us with the 2019 Open Championship (July 18-21) returning to prestigious Royal Portrush for the first time since it hosted the 1951 edition of the tournament.
While everyone is placing their bets on who will win the 2019 Open Championship and hoist the Claret Jug come Sunday evening, there is plenty of money to be made on wagering who will survive to see the weekend and who will slam their car trunk in anger on Friday after two poor days of golf.

Phil Mickelson Trending Towards Missing Cut
The great start to 2019, with a victory at Pebble Beach and a runner-up at the Desert Classic, seems like eons ago for Phil Mickelson. He’s missed four of his last six cuts, though interestingly the two made cuts were at majors, despite him only mustering 52nd & 71st-place results.
Phil Mickelson announces he lost 15 pounds while going on a six-day fast that included just water and a special coffee blend for wellness, plus a brief retreat.
15 pounds is the same as:
148 golf balls ⛳️
2.34 standard bricks ?
5.03 adult human brains ?— Jake Marsh (@PMTsportsbiz) July 15, 2019
With that wild weight loss regime concluded, maybe “Phil will be Phil” and stun us all by playing superb golf. But I just don’t see it.
Stats are facts, and the fact is, in the top six “strokes gained” categories this season, he’s at best 116th in five of them. The lone exception is strokes gained around the greens, where he’s 66th.
Pick: Phil Mickelson Misses Cut (+140)
Hideki Matsuyama Money in the Bank to Make Cut
The PGA Tour leader in consecutive cuts made is none other than Hideki Matsuyama with 25 straight. I’m so bullish on his chances to compete this week that I see Matsuyama as a solid bet to place in the top-5.
Most birdies/eagles per round in majors since beginning of 2015 (minimum 15 rounds played in span):@BKoepka 4.34@JordanSpieth 4.20@JustinRose99 3.97
Hideki Matsuyama 3.87@XSchauffele 3.84— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) July 15, 2019
Matsuyama has also made the cut in eleven of his last twelve majors, and has 13 top-25 finishes in 18 events this season. This is as close to a sure thing as it gets.
Pick: Hideki Matsuyama Makes Cut (-350)
Bubba Watson Struggles at Open Championship
For a man of such creativity and wizardry, it’s quite baffling that Bubba Watson and the British Open go together like oil and water. In his ten career appearances, he’s missed half the cuts, with his best showing T-23rd in 2012.
He’s also been struggling with his game of late, missing three of five cuts (two in majors), with nothing better than 54th in that span. In addition, Bubba has been dreadful putting this year, ranking 171st. Seems too good to be true, but the bet here is clear.
Pick: Bubba Watson Misses Cut (+110)
