It’s Ryder Cup week from Bethpage Black, with Team Europe looking to become the first repeat champion since they hoisted the trophy on three consecutive occasions between 2010 and 2014. The Europeans are seeking just their second win on US soil in the last 20 years, and online sportsbooks don’t like their chances. Team USA is the betting favorite, a line I completely disagree with as you’ll find out.

When Does Ryder Cup Start?

The 2025 Ryder Cup is set to begin Friday morning at 7:10 am with the first of two sessions. The morning session will be dedicated to foursome matches, while the afternoon session will feature four-ball matches.

The schedule will stay the same for Saturday barring any weather concerns, with foursomes in the morning and four-ball matches after lunch. Sunday will switch to singles play, pitting each of the nation’s 12 golfers against each other.

A full point is awarded to the winning side in every match, while half a point is handed out if play is tied after 18 holes. The reigning champion Europeans need to earn 14 points to retain the cup, while the Americans need to secure 14 and a half points to win the coveted trophy.

As of Thursday morning, you can get very favorable odds on Europe to pull off the upset. The Europeans are +165 to win outright, and +124 to lift the trophy. 28 points will be awarded throughout the week, and with Europe only needing 14 to retain the cup, they’ll lift the trophy if the competition finishes tied at 14.

It’s worth noting that each of the past five Ryder Cups have been won by at least 5 points, and the competition hasn’t finished in a tie since 1989.

Since Ryder Cup play began in 1927, Team Europe has only prevailed on US soil four times. But that was then and this is now. Top to bottom the Europeans are more talented, and have way more experience. This is essentially the same team as 2023, when they won convincingly in Italy.

Rasmus Hojgaard is the only newcomer, while six of the 12 golfers have at least three previous Ryder Cup appearances. Of the six veterans, only one (Matt Fitzpatrick) has a losing record, while Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are a combined 55-33-14 all-time.

Contrast that with the Americans, who feature four first-timers. Only three of their 12, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa have career winning records at the Ryder Cup, and Morikawa is arguably in the worst form of any of the 24 participants.

Also working in the Europeans favor is the way Bethpage is going to be set up. Ryder Cups on US soil are typically set up as birdie-fests that used to favor the Americans bomb and gauge style. This year, Team Europe boasts five of the seven longest hitters, giving them a significant advantage off the tee.

The counter argument would be that Team USA is anchored by Scottie Scheffler, but the World #1 can only play in a maximum of five matches, and has won just one of five career foursomes/four-ball matches.

Ryder Cup Props to Target

Scheffler isn’t the only American who struggles in team play. Only Cantlay and Morikawa have winning records in that format, and the ladder has posted only one full-field event top-20 since the first week of June.

Team Europe on the other hand, features seven golfers with winning records in foursomes and four-balls. More importantly, they’re used to playing with one another and will have a much better feel for their partners game than the Americans will.

I’m back the Europeans to be leading after Day 2 when team play wraps up. I’m also betting over 2.5 points for Tommy Fleetwood, who enters in the best form among his teammates.

Fleetwood flirted with victories all summer before finally sealing the deal at the richest event on Tour. His immaculate ball striking will put him and his partners in position to score on every hole, and he’ll be counted on to play every single session.

The Englishman has a sparkling 7-3-2 record at the Ryder Cup, and will add at least another 3 points to his resume after this week is wrapped up.
