Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels (63-65, 30-35 away) will be looking to take advantage of the MLB-worst Baltimore Orioles (39-86, 18-45 home) in the series finale on Thursday. First-pitch at Camden Yards is scheduled for 1:05 pm ET.
LA hands the ball to righty Jaime Barria while Keegan Akin starts for the Orioles. The Angels had won five of the last six against Baltimore before a 10-6 loss on Wednesday which saw the Halos blow a four-run lead.

Probable Pitchers
The Angels currently have just three healthy starting pitchers in Ohtani, Jose Suarez, and Barria, who will take the mound on Thursday. After briefly pitching for LA earlier in the season before getting sent down to Triple-A, Barria has now returned to the big league club and has made three starts since July 31st.
With the Angels dealing with COVID-19 issues within their staff, they definitely need a quality outing from the 25-year-old. Last time out, Barrios got hit around, lasting just two innings against the Cleveland Indians while surrendering five earned runs.

On the season, the right-hander has a 2-2 record and 5.87 ERA in 30.2 innings. Thursday’s start will be seen as a chance for Barria to find his footing and get a win against an Orioles ballclub that is completely lost right now. He hasn’t pitched much in the majors in 2021 which means Barria hasn’t faced Baltimore, but the Panamanian has made one start against them in his career.
Barria vs Akin
2-2 | Record | 0-8 |
5.87 | ERA | 7.92 |
30.2 | Innings Pitched | 63.2 |
17 | SO | 57 |
11 | BB | 26 |
As you can see by Akin’s numbers, he’s yet to actually win a start this season. The southpaw was initially in the Orioles bullpen but entered the rotation back in early June. He’s made 11 starts but has an extremely poor 7.92 ERA in 63.2 innings.
Opposing lineups are hitting .328 off Akin and have been feasting off his changeup and slider, batting close to .400. Command was a clear problem for the 26-year-old in his previous outing, giving up three earned runs to the Braves while walking three and allowing two home runs.

Unfortunately, Akin doesn’t have the best track record against the Angels, either. They touched him up for four runs on July 2nd, knocking him out of the game in just three innings. That was his only outing vs. LA in his career but with Baltimore finally ending their slump, it’s an opportunity for Akin to flip the script and get his team on the right track.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Orioles Hitters | Batting Average vs Barria | Angels Hitters | Batting Average vs Akin |

Trey Mancini | .333 | Phil Gosselin | .000 |
Anthony Santander | .000 | Jose Iglesias | .500 |

The Angels haven’t been playing the best baseball lately, losing four of their last five games. A depleted pitching staff doesn’t help their case, but Wednesday’s loss was basically handed to Baltimore. LA allowed the Orioles to score eight unanswered runs after they put up a five-spot in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Angels walked in two of those runs as well.

Shohei Ohtani did get hit around which is a huge rarity, allowing four earned and giving up three home runs. The offense was basically non-existent past the fourth inning too, with Ohtani himself going 0 for 4 with three K’s.
The Orioles can finally take a sigh of relief. Their 19-game losing skid is finally over and what better way to do it than in front of the home fans at Camden Yards with a comeback victory.

Baltimore’s Connor Greene and Dillon Tate did a tremendous job of shutting down the Angels after starter Chris Ellis was chased after three innings. The bottom of the eighth is where the Orioles did the majority of their damage, with Austin Hays clubbing a two-run pinch-hit double to break it wide open.
Angels vs Orioles Prediction
Barria hasn’t been great lately, but the Angels are 21-18 in day games, while the Orioles have won a big league-worst 11 games in afternoon contests. On top of that, Akin has struggled immensely. Therefore, LA is a safe bet here.
Pick: Los Angeles Angels moneyline (-130)
