The Toronto Blue Jays (36-30, 14-17 away, 36-29-1) look to stay hot on Tuesday when they meet the St Louis Cardinals (36-30, 22-12 home, 36-27-3 O/U) in the second of a three-game set at Busch Stadium at 6:45 pm CT/7:45 pm ET.

Chris Bassitt will be on the mound for Toronto while Miles Mikolas toes the rubber for St Louis. Tuesday’s MLB odds show a near pick’em in this battle of teams with identical records. The table below shows where to find the best Blue Jays vs Cardinals moneyline, runline, and game total.

The Blue Jays were in cruise control last night, taking a 3-0 into the bottom of the eighth, which is when the Cardinals erupted for four runs. But Toronto would tie it in the ninth before taking a 5-4 victory in ten innings. Alejandro Kirk (.316 BA, .782 OPS, 29 RBI) played the hero with four hits, including a homer, and two RBI. His double in the tenth plated the winning run.

Both teams got at least six innings from their starter last night and used three relievers thereafter, so both pens should be in fairly good shape for Tuesday night.

TOR vs STL Starting Pitchers: Bassitt vs Mikolas

Mikolas has largely been able to limit the damage this season but he is playing with fire. His ground-ball rate is a career-low 37.9%, yet he currently has a career-best 0.59 HR/9 even though is velo is down 1.2 MPH from last season and his spin rate isn’t noticeably higher. He isn’t even inducing softer contact than last year. His average exit velocity this year is 89.0; last year it was 88.8.

His xFIP (4.94) and xERA (4.35) are both considerably higher than his actual ERA, indicating regression is likely. And there’s a good chance that starts on Tuesday against a Toronto lineup that’s hit him hard. In 36 total at-bats, the Jays have a .361 average and .934 OPS with two homers (Davis Schneider, George Springer) and six RBI.

Chris Bassitt’s numbers against the Cards lineup is even more concerning, though the sample size is even smaller. In 27 at-bats, they have a .444 average and 1.409 OPS with four longballs (Nolan Gorman twice, Alec Burleson, Brendan Donovan).

Much of that damage stems from one disastrous start at the beginning of the 2023 season (nine runs on ten hits over 3.1 innings).

After back-to-back ugly starts at the end of May (10 runs on 16 hits over just 9.0 innings), Bassitt’s last start was a gem, going 7.0 innings against the Phillies while giving up just one run on five hits with six strikeouts.

Addison Barger, who has five home runs in his last ten games, has the shortest odds to go yard tonight at +375. He’s followed by teammate George Springer (+475), who leads the Jays with ten homers on the season and has already taken Mikolas yard once in his career.

Lars Nootbaar has the best odds on the St Louis side at +500. Nootbar has a team-high eight home runs but is currently in an 11-game drought.

Blue Jays vs Cardinals Prediction & Picks

  • Blue Jays moneyline (+100) at ESPN
  • Springer 1+ HR (+500) at BetMGM

Both teams are overperforming compared to preseason projections, but the Cardinals moreso and I don’t expect this team to stay in the wild-card race too much longer. I have also have a lot more confidence that Bassitt will put in a quality start than Mikolas, who is primed to give up some dingers.

Toronto also has a significantly better bullpen, at least based on ERA. The Jays are eighth in the league with a 3.38 team ERA out of their pen, while the Cardinals are 19th at 3.99.
