Probable Pitchers

On the mound, Max Fried (14-7, 3.04) goes for Atlanta to face Brandon Woodruff (9-10, 2.56).

Fried was nothing short of dazzling this season, tossing 19 quality starts in 28 outings, while the Braves went 18-10 in his starts. He was particularly filthy over the last two-plus months of the regular season, though — turning in a dozen straight quality starts and owning a 7-1 record and 1.56 ERA in that timeframe. He missed the Brewers each time the teams hooked up during the regular season, when the two squads split six games with each team taking two of three on the road.

Fried vs Woodruff Key Stats

Max Fried
VS
Brandon Woodruff
14-7 Record 9-10
3.04 ERA 2.56
3.49 xERA 3.29
1.09 WHIP 0.97
3.85 SO/W 4.91

Fried was particularly sharp over his last three starts, going at least seven innings against the Giants, Padres and the Phillies to the tune of a 3-0 mark and a microscopic 0.39 ERA. The 27-year-old has not pitched since last Wednesday — when he went seven innings and allowed four hits, an earned run and no walks while striking out six in a 7-2 victory against Philadelphia.

Fried was 7-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 14 road starts this season. In nine day game starts, he has a 5-1 record and 3.42 ERA.

Milwaukee counters with its second straight All-Star starter after Burnes in Woodruff. All the 28-year-old did this season was spin 20 quality outings among his 30 rotations turns. Milwaukee was only 16-14 in those starts, including an 0-4 run in September. Over his last four turns in the last month of the regular season, Woodruff went 0-3 with a 4.09 ERA. But, over the course of the season, he’s been among the best in franchise history.

He went 5.1 innings against the Braves July 31st, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out six in an eventual 8-1 loss.

Woodruff was 4-3 with a 2.31 ERA in 14 starts at home in 2021. He was 3-3 with a 2.12 ERA in 11 day game starts.

Will Bats Awake?

Braves outfielder Joc Pederson hit a solo shot in the eighth against Brewers reliever Adrian Houser Friday, but that was the only run a potent Atlanta lineup pushed across the plate. The Braves infield of Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley — a group that combined to smack 121 dingers during the regular season — went a combined 2-for-13 (.154) in Game 1, managing only a pair of singles. That will need to change for Atlanta to avoid an 0-2 hole.

Prior to Friday’s tilt, Adam Duvall (8), Eddie Rosario (7) and Albies (7) had been the Braves best sluggers since September 1st, going deep a combined 22 times. Woodruff will be tasked with shutting the group down for a second straight day.

Freeman and Swanson have each taken the Milwaukee starter deep, with the Atlanta shortstop going 3-for-8 against the right-hander in his career.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Braves Batters Batting Average vs Brandon Woodruff Brewers Batters Batting Average vs Max Fried
Jorge Soler .333 Willy Adames .333
Freddie Freeman .333 Christian Yelich .273
Ozzie Albies .222 Eduardo Escobar .400
Austin Riley .125 Lorenzo Cain .000

Fried has only faced a quartet of possible batters in Milwaukee’s lineup for Saturday, with none of them taking him deep (let alone an extra-base hit).

Milwaukee wasn’t much better offensively Friday. Five players had one hit, with Tellez providing the big blow.

Avisail Garcia and Luis Urias were the big bats for the Brewers in 2021, with 29 and 23 home runs, respectively, Former MVP Christian Yelich remains dangerous despite a rough finish to the year that saw him record a .221 average and just one home run after Sept. 1.

Braves vs Brewers Pick

Woodruff has been shaky of late and Fried … has not. You could make the argument that Atlanta’s Game 2 starter has been the best in baseball since the end of July.

With the Braves’ dangerous lineup capable of getting going at any time — even against elite pitching — I’m fading the home favorite in this spot and going with the visitors to take Game 2.

The Pick: Braves moneyline (+110)
