There’s little room for error in the NL West. The San Francisco Giants, owners of the best record in baseball, are clinging to just a one-game lead over the defending champion LA Dodgers, after suffering a second straight loss on Thursday to San Diego. The mini skid comes on the heels of a nine-game winning streak, but the club has failed to separate from the Dodgers thanks to a six-game winning streak by LA.
San Fran will aim to hold onto sole possession of the division lead on Friday (September 17th) when they face the NL East leading Atlanta Braves.
Braves vs Giants Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Atlanta Braves | +130 | +1.5 (-160) | O 7.5 (-120) |
San Francisco Giants | -150 | -1.5 (+140) | U 7.5 (+100) |
Odds as of September 16th at DraftKings.
The Giants opened as -150 favorites, in a game that features a total of 7.5. Atlanta is fresh off a two-game losing streak of its own, but are still three games clear of Philadelphia in the division.
First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 pm ET at Oracle Park in San Francisco, with cloudy, 61 degree night time temperatures in the forecast.
Probable Pitchers
Logan Webb will take the ball for San Fran, but despite his sparkling numbers, has struggled lately. He’s allowed 15 hits and eight runs over his past 13 innings, but has been bailed out by some timely run support. The Giants lineup has produced 18 runs in Webb’s last two starts, allowing him to pick up back-to-back victories.
The 24-year-old was incredibly impressive prior to his mini funk, yielding two runs or less in 14 straight, including his lone appearance against the Braves.

That night he scattered five hits over 7 shutout innings, striking out six in a 5-0 victory. Atlanta’s lineup has cooled off lately, scoring four or fewer runs in three of their past four outings, but did outscore San Francisco 15-10 during a three-game set three weeks ago.
Anderson vs Webb
7-5 | Record | 10-3 |
3.61 | ERA | 2.80 |
1.29 | WHIP | 1.11 |
.231 | OBA | .231 |
2.4 | SO/W Ratio | 4.1 |
The Braves will counter with Ian Anderson, who’s alternated good and poor starts over his past four outings. Last time out, he held Miami to two runs over 5 innings, while striking out nine en route to victory. The start prior however, was a different story. Colorado roughed him up four runs in only 3 innings of work.
He’s faced the Giants once in 2021, and like his counterpart, delivered a phenomenal performance. Anderson shutout San Fran over 5.2 innings, surrendering only four hits.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Braves Batters | Batting Average vs Webb | Giants Batters | Batting Average vs Anderson |
---|---|---|---|
Ozzie Albies | .333 | Brandon Belt | .500 |
Adam Duvall | .167 | LaMonte Wade Jr. | .333 |
Freddie Freeman | .333 | Brandon Crawford | .000 |
Joc Pederson | .286 | Anthony DeSclafani | .000 |
Austin Riley | .400 | Wilmer Flores | .500 |
Dansby Swanson | .000 | Darin Ruf | .500 |
Jorge Soler | .000 | Curt Casali | .000 |
Travis d’Arnaud | .000 | Tommy La Stella | .000 |
The Giants were without Kris Bryant, Evan Longoria and Buster Posey for that matchup, which offers at least some explanation for the power outage.
Braves vs Giants Pick
No team’s lineup has been hotter than San Fran’s lately, and we shouldn’t expect another goose eggs against Anderson. The Giants have homered in a franchise record 11 straight contests, and have scored at least six times in 10 of 11 games.

Five of their past six games, and nine of their past 11, have produced double-digit totals, while Atlanta boasts some serious firepower of its own. The Braves rank top-nine in MLB in runs, slugging, and OPS.
Even with a strong pitching matchup on deck, 7.5 runs is too low of a total the way these two teams can swing the bat.
Pick: Over 7.5 (-120)
