A pair of familiar foes will get reacquainted on Saturday, April 28th when the Giants host the Dodgers as AT&T Park. The two franchises have faced off 2,455 times dating back to 1890 when they both called New York City home.

Both teams entered 2018 with high hopes, but have stumbled out of the gate early on. Los Angeles began the season 4-9 and have struggled to score runs without third baseman Justin Turner, who has been on the shelf since breaking his left wrist in Spring Training.

The Giants have already suffered a pair of three-game losing streaks and are still waiting for their new personnel to find their groove.

The Giants have already suffered a pair of three-game losing streaks and are still waiting for their new personnel to find their groove. Right fielder Andrew McCutchen is hitting a career-low .205 with 22 strikeouts in 88 at bats, while third sacker Evan Longoria is hitting just .222 with four home runs and nine RBI. Both players will need to begin producing soon to keep San Francisco out of the NL West cellar.

San Francisco’s slump hasn’t rubbed off on starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, who is 2-0 with a career-low 0.35 ERA. The 32-year-old right-hander is throwing fewer four-seam fastballs and more change-ups than ever before, and it’s led to the best start of his 11-year career. He looked especially sharp in his last outing against the Angels, giving up just two hits in six innings pitched.

Taking the mound for the Dodgers is Alex Wood, who has yet to win a game in 2018. The 6’4” southpaw was rocked in a pair of early season starts against the Diamondbacks and A’s, but has settled down lately. He showed real promise against the Padres on April 17th, giving up just two hits and striking out seven in 5.1 innings.

Score Prediction

DODGERS 2
GIANTS  4

The Dodgers have been far better lately, winning seven of their last ten, but they’re still no match for Cueto. The two-time All-Star has given up just four hits combined in his last two starts while striking out 18. He also befuddled LA in his first game of the season, surrendering one hit over seven stellar innings. The Dodgers didn’t have an answer for him then and they won’t have an answer for him tonight.

Cueto will keep this one tight and should get just enough run support from San Francisco’s anemic offense to pull out the win.
